Honduras : Culture
Honduran society is, for the most part, rural and poor. The overall standard of living in the nation is one of the lowest in the Western Hemisphere. Foreign as well as domestic assessments of the nation have focused on its poverty to the point where this assessment dominates the outlook of the Honduran people. contempt the depressing statistics, Honduran society has numerous strengths. Among some of the positive factors are a comparatively high number of grassroots organizations, a peasant movement that has continued even during times of repression, and a corporatist political system in which organizations and classes instead of political parties make their political demands. Positive, too, is the absence of civil war and the high level of terrorism experienced by neighboring countries. The question for Honduras in the future is how, given the nation's limited resources, to deal with severe poverty and to avoid the repression and violence that poverty often engenders. Honduras Culture and Politics
January 27, 2010 ends one chapter in the unexpected history of Honduras, as the illegal regime headed by Roberto Micheletti cedes power to Porfirio Lobo Sosa, selected through a deeply flawed electoral process held while Honduras lacked freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, and personal security for citizens exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of conscience.
As ex-President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales exits office and leaves Honduras, the political goals that existed from June 28, 2009 to January 27, 2010 must be transformed by the members of the resistance movement who remain in the country.
It would be a great mistake if the world once again comfortably forgot to pay attention to what happens in Honduras. Whatever else you can say about the coup of 2009, it was unexpected, surprising to major world powers, including the United States.
Honduras has continued potential to surprise.

Koban: Japanese Community Policing
The Vice Minister of Security, Armando Calidonio, announced the formal addition of the Japanese model of community policing , called Koban, as part of the National Police training and continuing education. As part of the announcement, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) turned over a manual on Koban, elaborated from the experiences of the military police of Sao Paulo implementation, La Tribuna reported . The JICA funded program is scheduled to run through the end of 2011.
So what is Koban? Literally it means "police box". The Honduran press is taking it slightly out of context as standing for the whole model of Japanese community policing, when its only one part of it. Japanese community policing consists of police boxes (koban) and residential police boxes (chuzaisho). The Japanese National Police published a good description of the system in English here , and its from this description that the rest of this article is sourced.

36. Honduras Culture
Honduras culture is both similar and different from other Central American countries. Both Ladino and Caribbean peoples impact the culture of Honduras.
http://www.fun-in-honduras.com/honduras-culture.html
Honduras culture is unique
Ethic groups and regions divide the culture of Honduras. Ladinos dominate Honduras culture , who make up 90% of the country. The Ladinos or Mestizos are the focus for today. I will talk about other groups on a later date. Honduras lacked importance in the Spanish Empire. This had a profound effect on Honduras culture and makes the elite class less defined. Honduras has always been dominated by foreigners. First Spain, then the United States treated Honduras like a providence, even today most of the companies are owned by foreigners.
Regions
The culture of Honduras is divided by regions. The majority of Hondurans live in the central corridor. The North Coast and Bay Islands are influenced by the Caribbean culture. The Garifuna, Arabs, Chinese, Bay islanders, North American and Europeans Expats make the coast very cosmopolitan. The Mayan and Lenca indigenous people populate the West. The East is almost like the wild west of a century ago including blood feuds and bandits. However The Olancho consists mostly of Ranchers, Farmers and Loggers. The North East is the La Moskitia rain forest.
United States influence
The American banana companies have a major impact on Honduras. The United States Military has been involved in Honduras several times including most recently the Contra war in Nicaragua. Even today Hondurans love American products, listen to Country or Rock and Roll music and eat in fast food restaurants.

Roatan Honduras Fishing Tournament Winners
Fishing is an Important Part of Honduras Culture The annual fishing tournament held on Roatan in September, 1999, had two surprise winners. Pictured here are, on the left, Aimee McNab (15 years old) and Christianne Etches (14) with the 159 lb. blue marlin that netted them first prize in several categories, including largest fish caught. The young women are students at Children's Palace Bilingual School in French Harbor, Roatan. Amidst many large and expensive fishing boats, Aime and Christianne set out from French Harbor in a simple 18' boat. They hooked this fellow off West End Point and discovered they had forgotten to bring a gaff with them. Aime removed her sweatshirt and tied it around the fish's bill and she and Christianne managed to pull it onto their boat with their hands. There were many contestants in the 1999 Annual Fishing Tournament, and the second largest fish weighed in at less than 50 lbs. The largest blue marlin caught in one of Roatan's annual tournaments weighed 450 lbs. We're not saying that you will catch something like this one, but fishing charters are easily arranged for visitors to Roatan. You just never know....
