    Hong Kong Portal
The geography of Hong Kong primarily consists of three main territories: Hong Kong Island Kowloon Peninsula , and the New Territories The name "Hong Kong", literally meaning "fragrant harbour", is derived from the area around present-day Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island , where fragrant wood products and fragrant incense were once traded. The narrow body of water separating Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula, Victoria Harbour , is one of the deepest natural maritime ports in the world.

Geography Hong Kong island sits just south of the Tropic of Cancer on similar latitudes as Calcutta, Havana, and Hawaii, and sharing the same longitude as Wuhan in central China, Bali, and Perth. Surrounding the country's southern coast is the South China Sea. The country consists of a peninsular protruding from southeastern China and hundreds of islands scattered off the coast. Kowloon and the New Territories make up the peninsular, while south off the mainland is Hong Kong Island and various other remote islands. Deep waters surround Hong Kong, and with its wide harbors protected by mountains in the north and south, the region is favorable as a passing point for ships. Its geographical location between the Taiwan Straits, the South China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean make it a strategic channel for sea traffic in Asia and the world. Size Hong Kong is a small-sized island covering 1,095 sq. km (423 sq. miles). However, there are currently many reclamation projects at hand, thus expanding the land area. Hong Kong never used to be as big as it is now. From 1851 to 1997, the total area of land reclaimed from the sea measured to 60 sq. km (23 sq. miles). In area, the island of Hong Kong is 80 sq. km (31 sq. miles), Kowloon peninsular is 47 sq. km (18 sq. miles), the New Territories is 794 sq. km (306 sq. miles), and the remote islands total 175 sq. km (67 sq. miles).

The Island Line MTR runs across the entirety of the waterfront, East-West, and it takes less than an hour to cover the whole distance. Travel to the south side of the Island is less predictable, as there is no MTR, and transport is therefore less direct. Main Hong Kong Island Attractions
    Kowloon Side
Kowloon is on the opposite side of the harbor and is attached to the Chinese mainland. Kowloon has undergone an economic boom since the British left and the old Kai Tak Airport was closed, and although it remains visibly poorer and run-down, its prospects, and with them its skyline, are growing. A number of MTR lines serve Kowloon, as well as the KCR, the regional rail which brings commuters into the New Territories.

    Hong Kong
Dateline: 06/30/97 (Rev. 12/04/97) As China assumes control of their new Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, it is important to understand the history and geography of this vibrant economic enclave in Southeast Asia.
    History
Great Britain originally took control of Hong Kong with its excellent deep-water port during the nineteenth century Opium Wars with China. Following the First Opium War the treaty of Nanjing was signed, giving Britain full control of Hong Kong forever. Following additional conflicts, additional land was ceded to Britain and the 1898 treaty called for a 99-year lease of the new territory. On July 1, that 99-year lease expires and Hong Kong reverts to Chinese control and an official name change to Xianggang. Hong Kong's port made it a prized possession of the British Empire and helped contribute to the territory's success in the Pacific Rim. After the Communist victory of 1949 in China, Hong Kong began changing from a minor port to a major economic power in the global economy. A 1950 United Nations embargo on trade with China kept Hong Kong from continuing trade with their main partner. Hong Kong had a large base of human resources but no natural resources. They turned this to their advantage by importing raw materials, building factories, and began exporting finished goods such as textiles, clothing, electronics, plastics, toys, and watches and clocks. Now Hong Kong is one of the most productive and wealthy areas of Southeast Asia.
