Main Page With Hong Kong History X , low-budget writer/director Kenneth Lau offers his take on the "goo wak jai" (young Triad) genre, which was popular at the time, with films like the Young and Dangerous series dominating the local box office. Lau tries to make his effort more gritty and realistic, much the same way Ringo Lam did with the On Fire movies during the heyday of the "heroic bloodshed" pictures of the 1980's. But Kenneth Lau is really no Ringo Lam, and we're just left with your standard Hong Kong gangster drama, which, as you might guess, has really nothing to do with the Edward Norton movie American History X In the film, To Tai-Wai plays Bee, a young man living under the shadow of his brother Fifteen (Anthony Wong), a popular and powerful local Triad. After Fifteen is sent to prison, Bee decides to join up with Fire (Wayne Lai), to help support his ailing mother (Helena Law Lan) and impress Fifteen's girlfriend, Sandy (Yoyo Mung). Bee quickly becomes one of the biggest Triads in the area, which becomes a real problem after Fifteen is released from prison and Fire wants him permanently taken out of the picture.

Hong Kong History This is a very brief list of important historical moments and facts. Try visiting a library and learn something. The only thing more magnificent than the Special Administrative Region's cinema is its rich, tumultuous history. Many reviewers can talk and pontificate about Hong Kong filmmakers and symbolism - few actually know what they are talking about. If you want to appreciate your favorite films on a level you never have before - look into the customs, folklore, philosophy and history of their native country. You'd be surprised what subtleties you are missing, and what doors you have yet to open. 3000 B. C. - First recorded settlements emerge on the island. These people are known as "Tonkas," many assimilated with the aboriginal inhabitants. It is believed that the "Tonka," were from what is now known as Vietnam. Many took residence in what is now called "The New Territories." Later, the Cantonese settlers label themselves "Poon Tei." 2000 B. C. - A written, "universal" pictography develops in China 1122 B. Now let me introduce to you a few of the past governors of Hong Kong, picked out from among the twenty-eight ones, who were people of every description.
The governor of the shortest term of office
The first governor was Sir Henry Pottinger. He held the position only for ten months, and for this reason he was called the governor of the shortest term of office. He laid down the foundation for Hong Kong to become later the administrative, military, and commercial center of Britain in the Far East and established the Administrative and Legislative Departments at the same time. On the other hand, he transformed Hong Kong into the chief transfer station of the British opium traffic and enabled opium to flow into China"s mainland in tremendous quantities, with the result that British opium dealers earned an enormous amount of silver, which might be said to be stained with the blood of the Chinese people, and the life and health of the Chinese population were seriously jeopardized. The governor most resourceful for advertizing
The ninth governor Sir George Ferguson Bowen was skilled in advertising. He gave Hong Kong the well-known nickname of the Strait of Gibraltar in the East, by which he meant that Hong Kong would become an important commercial port of Great Britain next only to London. Owing to the fact that Hong Kong maintained neutrality in the following Sino-French War it gradually became an entrepot in international trade.

Hong Kong History
var addthis_pub="lalphoto"; The history of Hong Kong is relatively brief compared to other countries in the region such as Japan and China. Although there is evidence of human settlements going back thousands of years, the modern history of Hong Kong did not start until 1842 when China lost the opium wars to the British and subsequently Hong Kong became a British colony. At the time the island was very basic and mainly a fishing port.
During the following decades, Hong Kong flourished with trade expanding at a rapid rate and business sectors such as banking and insurance began to thrive. As the island lacked resources such as water and farmland, the British pushed for more land from China in 1898 and succeeded in obtaining new areas which are now know as the New Territories.
Unlike the previous agreement, the New Territories were offered to the British on a 99 year lease set to expire in 1997.
In the early part of the 20th century, Hong Kong managed to escape much of the effects of World War 1 during the period 1914 to 1918. Its` population in the first half of the 20th century expanded rapidly from half a million people at the beginning to over 1.5 million by the 1940s. With the arrival of World War II and the Japanese invasion of China, Hong Kong took in a huge number of refugees from the Chinese mainland as people fled to escape the Japanese onslaught.

History of Hong Kong China
In prehistoric periods, the shoreline of Hong Kong was inhabited. Two Neolithic cultures have been found with fine pottery and carvings that date to about 4,000 BC. During the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BC) and Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), people from the mainland came and settled in Hong Kong, and coins of the Han Dynasty have been found in Hong Hong. This area was an important trading and strategic region for Chinese mainland during the Tan and Song dynasties (618 to 1279). After this period, the importance of Hong Kong faded, and did not start attracting attention until the 19th century.
History of Hong Kong and Western Influence
The first westerner to visit Hong Kong was Jorge Alvares, a Portuguese mariner, and he began trading with the Chinese. Tea, silk and other Asian luxury goods were introduced to europe by the Portuguese. During the 15th and 16th century is when western influence came about in Hong Kong due to the increased trade of Chinese products such as tea and silk.

Hong Kong History
Human settlement in Hong Kong can be traced back to the Paleolithic era. The region was first incorporated into Imperial China in the Qin Dynasty, and served as a trading post and a naval base during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. The area's earliest recorded European visitor was Jorge Alvares, a Portuguese mariner who arrived in 1513. Contact with the United Kingdom was established after the British East India Company founded a trading post in Canton, Guangdong Province. The refusal by Qing Dynasty's authorities to import opium in 1839 leads to the First Opium War between China and the British Empire. The British forces first occupied Hong Kong Island in 1841 and the initial colonial government was established on January 25 that year. When the First Opium War was ended in the following year, the island was formally ceded from China under the Treaty of Nanking, which was signed on August 29, and then the British established a Crown Colony with the founding of Victoria City. In 1860, after China's humiliate defeat in the Second Opium War, the Kowloon Peninsula that located at south of Boundary Street and Stonecutter's Island were ceded to Britain permanently under the Convention of Peking. In 1898, Britain obtained a 99-year "lease" of the adjacent northern lands and Lantau Island with outlying islands, where became known as the New Territories.

Hong Kong : History
According to archaeological studies initiated in the 1920s, human activity on Hong Kong dates back over 5 millennia. Excavated neolithic artifacts suggest an determine from northern Chinese stone-age cultures. The territory was settled by Han Chinese during the 17th century, A.D., demonstrated by the find of an ancient tomb at Lei Cheung Uk in Kowloon. The first major migration from northern China to Hong Kong occurred during the Sung Dynasty. The British East India Company made the first successful sea venture to China in 1699, and Hong Kong's trade with British merchants developed rapidly soon after. After the Chinese defeat in the First Opium War Hong Kong was ceded to Britain in 1842 under the Treaty of Nanking. The United Kingdom, concerned that Hong Kong could not be defended unless surrounding areas also were under British control, executed a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898, remarkablely expanding the size of the Hong Kong colony. In the late 19th century and early 20th centuries, Hong Kong developed as a warehousing and distribution center for U.K. trade with southern China. After the end of World War II and the communist takeover of Mainland China in 1949, hundreds of thousands of people fled from China to Hong Kong. Hong Kong became an economic success and a manufacturing, commercial, finance, and tourism center. High life expectancy, literacy, per capita income, and other socioeconomic measures attest to Hong Kong's achievements over the last five decades.

Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997.
In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years. History
After 1949, when the Communists took control of mainland China, hundreds of thousands of refugees crossed the border, making Hong Kong's urban areas some of the most densely populated in the world. Problems of housing, health, drug addiction, and crime were the target of aggressive governmental programs, and Hong Kong's long-standing water problem was eased by the construction of an elaborate system of giant reservoirs and the piping in of water from China. In May, 1967, Hong Kong was struck by a wave of riots and strikes inspired by China's Cultural Revolution. The government reacted firmly, and, although the Chinese retaliated by briefly stopping the piping of water and by attacking British representatives in Beijing, relations between Hong Kong and China soon resumed the surface harmony that had existed since the late 1950s. The crackdown in 1989 at Tiananmen Square in Beijing inspired fears that China would not respect Hong Kong's autonomy, and in the next few years many business people left, affecting Hong Kong's economy. In 1991, Hong Kong's first direct legislative elections (which accounted for about 30% of the seats) were won almost entirely by liberal, prodemocracy candidates, and no pro-China candidates were elected.
