Promotes the cause of religious freedom, perpetuates the memory of the Huguenot settlers in America, and commemorates the principal events in Huguenot history.
    http://huguenotsocietyofamerica.org/

he Huguenot Society of America was founded in 1883 through the initiative of Alfred V. Wittmeyer, Rector of the French Church in New York City, and a group of Huguenot descendants. Its first president was John Jay, grandson and namesake of the first Chief Justice of the United States. The members organized to perpetuate the memory of the Huguenot settlers in America, to commemorate the principal events in the history of the Huguenots, and to promote the cause of religious freedom. To this end, the Society collects and preserves documents relating to Huguenot history and genealogy; hosts luncheons and receptions; publishes books; presents lectures; and maintains a library of books, monographs, manuscripts, and materials on the Huguenot experience. In addition, the Society offers scholarships to college students of Huguenot ancestry and awards grants to scholars and relevant organizations when practicable. Pictured at right is Admiral Gaspard de Coligny (1519-1572)nobleman, military leader, and Huguenot martyr.

    Christopher H. Wynkoop.
As of August 15, 2005 there were sources of Wynkoop information detailed here, not including the newspaper articles listed at the bottom. This list grows on an almost daily basis, so I'm sure, that with a little searching, you will find something here that relates to your own branch of the family. Copies of Richard Wynkoop's 1878 and 1904 editions of the Wynkoop Genealogy, printed on acid-free paper, with a lifespan of about 200 years or so, can be purchased from Higginson Books in Salem, Massachusetts. Their website can be reached at: http://www.higginsonbooks.com/ Koen Wijnkoop has arranged for a special rate on these Genealogies for subscribers of the Wynkoop Family Newsletter. Be sure to mention this discount when purchasing these books from Higginson. The 1866 edition of Wynkoop Family; A Preliminary Genealogy can now be purchased in book form or CD from Quintin Publications of Orange Park, Florida. This now brings all three of Richard Wynkoop's published Wynkoop Genealogies back in print, good news for all of us.

History Information Names Contact Points ... Other Sites History Overview First we must identify a Walloon. A Walloon is a member of a French speaking people of Celtic descent inhabiting southern and southeastern Belgium and adjacent regions of France. Walloon is also the French dialect of these people. The Drainage People The skilled drainage people travelled to where they could find work just as the other artisans in the manufacture of silk, velvet and linen, drainage was an art form. They travelled to London, Norwich, Kent, and other parts of England. The settlement that had been in the English Pale behind Calais remained together, ended up in Middelburg Walcheren. They went, as a body, to Sandtoft, they sailed up the Humber and docked just below Doncaster. Cornelius Vermuyden had had a chapel built for them at Sandtoft, after acquiring permission and installed a little company town which was later burned out and the church destroyed - they then moved to Thorney and environs. In his book, SMILES states: "a scheme was set afoot for reclaim of drowned lands in Hatfield Chase and the Great Level of the Fens and a large number of labourers assembled under Cornelius Vermuyden to execute necessary works. They were, however, a very different class of men from the modern navvies - for wherever they went, they formed themselves into congregations, erected churches, and appointed ministers to conduct their worship. Upward of 200 Flemish families settled on land reclaimed by them in the Isle of Axholme; the ships which brought the immigrants up the Humber to their new home being facetiously hailed as "the navy of Tarshish".In short, wherever the refugees settled, they acted as so many missionaries of skilled work, exhibiting the best practical examples of diligence, industry, and thrift and teaching the English people in the most effective manner the beginnings of those various industrial arts in which they have since acquired so much distinction and wealth."

    Welcome
    France's records: a long history
Family genealogy represents the research of the ancestors, and sometimes the descendants, of a given individual using civic registers. In France, since 21 September 1792, the law has required that each birth, marriage and death is registered by the civic officer of the town or community. The registers are kept in duplicate - one copy at the town hall, and the other at the Clerk’s Office of the Tribunal. The registers are kept in place for one hundred years, during which they may be consulted by special dispension of the public prosecutor. Older records are transferred to the Department Record Office of  the city Prefecture. Records of the  Ancient Regime  (Before the French Revolution) are also available at the Department Record Office. The first french records were kept after the ruling of Villers-Côtteret in August 1539, which required parish priests to keep records, in duplicate, of baptisms, marriages and burials. Badly applied, it required the ruling of Saint Germain en Laye in April 1667, and the royal declaration of April 9th 1736, to see such registers suitably held for each parish.
An other important ressource for genealogist is the notaries records. Since late middle-ages, notaries are present in each town by royal order. The notaries records contained will, successions acts, marriage contract, land lease, and many others informations which can give  your genealogy an access to the oldest part of your family history.
