humanism as both a program and a philosophy. Textbooks will tell you that the humanists of the Renaissance rediscovered the Latin and Greek classics (hence the "rebirth" or "renaissance" of the classical world), that humanist philosophy stressed the dignity of humanity, and that humanists shifted intellectual emphasis off of theology and logic to specifically human studies. In pursuing this program, the argument goes, the humanists literally created the European Renaissance and paved the way for the modern, secular world.
studia humanitatis . The studia humanitatis originated in the mddle ages and were all those educational disciplines outside of theology and natural science. Humanism was not opposed to logic, as is commonly held, but opposed to the particular brand of logic known as Scholasticism. In point of fact, the humanists actively revised the science of logic. Humanism, then, really begins during the middle ages in Europe; while the humanist scholars of the Renaissance made great strides and discoveries in this field, humanistic studies were really a product of middle ages. Not only that, the "rediscovery" of the classical world which was the hallmark of Renaissance humanism in reality began much earlier in the middle ages; as Europeans began to see themselves as a single ethnic group with a common origin in the middle ages, the recovery of classical literature, both Latin and Greek, became a concern for all the medieval centers of learning.
studia humanitatis consisted of more or less five disciplines drawn from the classical educational curriculum, called the

Humanism: Philosophy vs. Dogma
January 1st, 2000 by Doug Is the Humanist Philosophy a dogma? Humanism is a dogma in that there is a set of principles and ideas that in sum describe Humanism. We do that in order to set our dogma apart from the Catholic dogma or the Ohio dogma. The different flavors of Humanism further define themselves by adding more specific principles and ideas. These flavors might point out how a Secular Humanist is different from say a Religious Humanist. Each has a set a principles in common with Humanism but each has additional principles or ideas different from the other flavors. One common principle to Humanism is that religion should not be used to solve human problems. Most if not all Humanists would agree with that. What would really spark a heated debate among Humanists would be trying to decide if Humanism was religious. Secular Humanists would assert that Humanism is not a religion and Religious Humanists would have no problem saying it was a religion. The biggest strength of Humanism, establishing principles by consensus, can also be a hindrance. Because there is no central authority dictating what Humanism is, it is hard to grasp a clear definition.

What is Humanism?
Our view
A Humanist ethos is crucial for any society which wishes to be peaceful, stable and progressive. Humanist tenets are based on the principles of rational and ethical thought and action. Humanism effectively meets challenges on the basis of reason and common humanity. "The Humanist philosophy embraces everyone who believes in rational thought and ethical principles, and is willing to be active in the services of these principles." American Humanist Association Humanism is a progressive lifestance that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead meaningful, ethical lives capable of adding to the greater good of humanity. British Humanist Association Humanism is the belief that we can live good lives without religious or superstitious beliefs. Humanists make sense of the world using reason, experience and shared human values. We seek to make the best of the one life we have by creating meaning and purpose for ourselves. We take responsibility for our actions and work with others for the common good. Humanist Society of Scotland The Humanist Society of Scotland (HSS) seeks to represent those who adopt a non-religious, but ethical life stance based on enlightened self-interest. It aims to build a better human world without reliance on supernatural forces.

This course will examine Foucault's radical critique of humanism and its consequences for thinking about the subject and power. We begin by considering Heidegger's rejection of humanism, specifically his critique of the subject as the ground of intelligibility of everything. We will consider what this overturning of the metaphysics of the subject implies for rethinking the human and the nature and danger of totalizing technological practices. We will then turn to Foucault's parallel critique of the subject, the study of "man", and disciplinary bio-power, and ask whether a new view of the subject and power can be developed in the aftermath of the humanism that Foucault and Heidegger so strongly criticize. Pragmatic Witness
Humanism: Philosophy of the New World Order
Socialism and humanism always cause economic and moral bankruptcy.
If the people can be convinced that there was no creation, it necessarily follows that:
  • there is no creator (God), no sacred or inalienable right to Life, Liberty, and Property, no divine purpose for mankind, no life after death, or Judgment Day.
It then becomes much easier to promote:
  • situational ethics (no absolute right or wrong), the ends justifies the means, abortion, euthanasia, the right to suicide, homosexuality or any other variety of sexual exploration, Goals 2000, the common good over individual rights, the notion that the environment and lower animals are more important than human beings, and One World Government under socialism.
See what the humanists are promoting! Below is a copy of humanist manifesto I, written in 1933 and humanist manifesto II, written in 1973 for your perusal. Added comments are blue and added emphasis are Bold. A Humanist Manifesto I The time has come for widespread recognition of the radical changes in religious beliefs throughout the modern world. The time is past for mere revision of traditional attitudes. Science and economic change have disrupted the old beliefs. Religions the world over are under the necessity of coming to terms with new conditions created by a vastly increased knowledge and experience. In every field of human activity, the vital movement is now in the direction of candid and explicit humanism. In order that religious humanism may be better understood we, the undersigned, desire to make certain affirmations which we believe the facts of our contemporary life demonstrate.
