Hummingbird Facts and Information
Facts about the hummingbird and more....
Hummingbird is a small bird of the Trochilidae family. The rapid beating of the hummingbirds wings (60 to 80 beats per second) makes the distinctive humming sound from which they get their name.
Interesting facts about hummingbirds:
the hummingbird is the smallest bird and also the smallest of all animals that have a backbone. a hummingbird has no sense of smell because a hummingbird can rotate its wings in a circle, they are the only bird that can fly forwards, backwards, up, down ,sideways and hover in mid air. to conserve energy while they sleep or when food is scarce, they can go into a hibernation-like state (torpor) where their metabolic rate is slowed to !/15th of its normal rate. during migration, some hummingbirds make a non-stop 500 mile flight over the Gulf of Mexico.

Hummingbirds rely on nectar as a major part of their diet. You can attract hummingbirds to your yard and help them along on their long journey by providing a hummingbird feeder with sugar water. If you also grow a hummingbird garden to provide natural nectar plants, you'll provide a feast they can't resist! Photo: Geri DeBoer Fill 'er Up! Keep a Hummingbird Feeder You don't need to by commercial nectar to fill your feeder. Here's how to make your own:
  • You'll need 1 part ordinary white granulated sugar to 4 parts water. Use ordinary granulated white table sugar. Do NOT use honey, artificial sweeteners, flavorings, or food coloring.
  • To prevent rapid spoilage, boil the nectar for up to two minutes. COOL the mixture before adding it to the feeder.

Hummingbirds - Who Are They?
Hummingbirds are called so for the sound that they produce during a flight. These are one of the most amazing birds on earth and are famous for their variety of colorations and speed of wings. It is believed that the species originated from insect-eating swift-like birds that inhabited the northern Andes Mountains of South America.
Hummingbirds - Distribution
Nowadays, Hummingbirds are found in North, Central, and South America. The density is greater in areas that are closer to the equator. The Hummingbird inhabits almost all zones including tropical forests and deserts. Earlier, they were extensively hunted because of their feathers. Yet, people soon realized that there is a danger of extinction for this species. Nowadays, Hummingbirds are becoming well adapted to living near humans. However, about 9 species remain critically endangered. The species is so fast that it can escape such predators as snakes, falcons, cats, etc., unless taken by surprise. The Hummingbird is very brave and will attack other birds that attempt to invade its territory. An amazing ability to maneuver helps Hummingbirds to feel safe in the wild. Thus, habitat loss remains one of the most acute threats for the species. The human population is ever expanding forcing the Hummingbird from its natural habitats and the process is hard to control. It is possible, though, to attract Hummingbirds to gardens and preserve necessary habitats by maintaining flower sites.

    How do hummingbirds eat?
Hummingbirds are very small birds with a high metabolism. A great deal of energy is spent flying, so they must feed almost constantly. Hummingbirds can consume up to twice their body weight in nectar every day. They usually feed on nectar and insects. Hummingbirds actually lap up the nectar with their tongues. A lot of people think that hummingbirds have a hollow tongue like a straw. Their tongues do have grooves on the sides that collect nectar. When the bill constricts, the hummingbird can swallow the nectar from flowers and feeders. Hummingbirds are able to perch and will do so at feeders regularly. Because they fly so much, they have poorly developed feet. They can barely walk at all. The hummingbird is much more comfortable in flight.
    Feeding Hummingbirds
It is important to keep any nectar feeder clean and filled with fresh solution.
