It's not a very big country, but there's a lot to see and do in Hungary. There are many old buildings there. There are many colorful houses. Budapest is Hungary's capital. It is famous for the number of pools and baths there. Many countries surround Hungary. To the north are Slovakia and Ukraine, to the east is Romania. To the south are Serbia and Croatia, to the west is Austria and Slovenia. Because of its location, Hungary has had an interesting history. For hundreds of years, many people from east and west have fought over Hungary. Many different people have lived in that country. Each group of people brought something new to Hungary.

Geography
Hungary Table of Contents THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY lies in the central Danube Basin. With 92,103 square kilometers of territory, it is the sixteenth largest European country. The country's terrain consists largely of plains and hill country and is divided into three major geographic areas: the Great Plain, covering the central part of the country, the Transdanube in the west, and the Northern Hills along the northern border. The climate is mild and continental, although great contrasts in temperatures can occur. Hungary is roughly the size of the state of Indiana. It measures about 250 kilometers from north to south and 524 kilometers from east to west. It has some 2,258 kilometers of boundaries, shared with Austria and Slovenia to the west, Croatia and Serbia and Montenegro to the south, Romania to the southeast, Ukraine to the northeast, and Slovakia to the north. Hungary's modern borders were first established after World War I when, by the terms of the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, it lost more than two-thirds of what had formerly been the Kingdom of Hungary and 58.5 percent of its population. With the aid of Nazi Germany, the country secured some boundary revisions at the expense of parts of Slovakia in 1938 and Carpatho-Ukraine in 1939 and at the expense of Romania in 1940. However, Hungary lost these territories again with its defeat in World War II. After World War II, the Trianon boundaries were restored with a small revision that benefited Czechoslovakia.

    Hungary Is Unique
Hungary is a country in Europe. It is over 1000 years old. The first King of Hungary was Saint Stephen who lived from 975 to 1038. He continued the Christenization begun by his father, Duke Geza, fighting off the revolts led by pagan nobles until he united the country. He divided the country into counties governed by royal officials who kept an eye on the nobles. Through the centuries, the crown sent to him by Pope Sylvester II has remained the sacred symbol of Hungarian national existence. (From 1945 to 1978, the crown was held by the United States). Hungary is much smaller now than it was when King Stephan I ruled. It was split up after WWI, leaving only the central part intact. Now, Hungary is almost the same size as the state of Indiana, just a little smaller. About 10 million people live in Hungary, and many Hungarians live throughout the world. The capital of Hungary is Budapest on the Danube river. Budapest was once two cities on two sides of the river, Buda and Pest, but then the people built a bridge, and the two cites became one city, Budapest. Hungarians are a very special people. No one is quite sure where they came from, although they are clearly related to the ancient tribe known as Huns (maybe you've heard of Attilla the Hun?). The Hungarian language is unique, unrelated to any other language on earth, although it has some similarities with Scandanavian languages. I only know a few phrases, and they are fun to say, but hard to spell, since the Hungarian alaphabet is not the same as the English alphabet. For instance, in Hungarian, cs is pronounced the way we would pronounce ch, and there are a lot of accent marks and strange-looking letter combinations.
