The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I 1916-18 Peter Jung Nov 2003 Paperback Book Description The part played in the Great War by the armies of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy is little known to English-speakers, perhaps because 1918 saw the complete destruction of the Empire. Yet it was of great importance, providing nearly all Central Powers forces on the Italian front, huge numbers on the Russian front, the Balkans and even a contingent in Turkey and Palestine. This second volume describes this complex organisation from the accession of Emperor Karl I in November 1916, through the victory of Caporetto and failure of the Piave offensive, to the final Armistice. The text is supported by tables and insignia charts, and illustrated with rare photographs and colourful plates. Hungary 1968-Today
Janos Kadar introduced the New Economic Mechanism (NEM) to Hungary in 1968, ten years after he had been installed in place of Imre
Nagy, and roughly the same time as Alexander Dubcek was attempting to "put a human face" on Communism. In those ten years Kadar
went about a vicious and thorough "Normalization" process. This process came on the heels of a mass migration of Hungarians (over 200,000)
to Austria before a barbed wire wall was imposed. Kadar's government arrested strike leaders and freedom fighters; eventually over 10,000
Hungarians were jailed. After Khruschev's speech at the 22nd Party Congress declaring the end of the Stalinist cult of personality, Kadar
declared a general amnesty, releasing these jailed Hungarians. In this new and strange climate in Hungary theNEM attempted to be a consumer based approach to communism that allowed for private
shops selling western goods, a relaxing of heavy industrial production and a relaxing of some workers' requirements. This brand of
Communism came to be known as Goulash Communism; it was a Hungarian creation distinct from the Soviet style of Communism (Borscht

    5th century
The Hungarian tribes left the area of the Urals. They passed along the Volga and the Caspian Sea. After several hundred years of wandering, they reached the Carpathian Basin.
Stephen was converted to Christianity. After his death, he was canonized.
An abbey was set up at Tihany. The foundation charter was drawn up on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. This is the earliest written record extant in the Hungarian language.
The Mongolian Tatars devastated the country. Their presence, which lasted a year, halted development for at least a century. After the warfare with the Hungarians, the Tatars did not continue towards the west.
The Turks occupied Buda. Hungary was split into three parts. The Habsburg governed the western part of the country, the central area was ruled by the Turks, and the south-east Transylvanian principality (today part of Roumania) for a long time was the citadel of Hungarian culture.
Buda was recaptured from the Turks. (The Turks - similarly to the Tartars - could only advance in Europe to the territory of Hungary. Here they were faced by obstacles, after which no strength was left for the siege of Vienna.)
First half of the 19th century
A national reform movement was launched for the political and economic transformation of the country, for Hungarian language and culture. This was when the

The fortunes of Austria never seemed brighter than in 1628 when Wallenstein began the siege of Stralsund. The Swedish and French intervention. His failure, followed by the arrival of Gustavus Adolphus in Germany in 1630, proved the death blow of Austrian hopes. In 1632 Gustavus Adolphus was killed, in 1634 Wallenstein was assassinated, and in 1635 France entered into the war. The Thirty Years ' War now ceased to be a religious struggle between Catholicism and Protestantism; it resolved itself into a return to the old political strife between France and the Habsburgs. The peace of Westphalia, 1648. Till 1648 the Bourbon and Habsburg powers continued the war, and at the peace of Westphalia Austria suffered severe losses. Ferdinand III. (1637-1657) was forced to yield Alsace to France, to grant territorial supremacy, including the right of making alliances, to the states of the Empire, and to acknowledge the concurrent jurisdiction of the imperial chamber and the Aulic council. The disintegration of the Holy Roman Empire was now practically accomplished, and though the possession of the imperial dignity continued to give the rulers of Austria prestige, the Habsburgs henceforward devoted themselves to their Austrian interests rather than to those of the Empire.

The following text is ripped from the book of Zoltán Halász (you can find bibliographic data at the end of this document). It was the best article on Hungarian history in English I have found, this is why I "borrowed" it instead of translating my own words. It is only a part of his wonderful book which is basically a picture book stuffed with superb photos. Buy one if you get some. I plan to insert some maps and pictures into this file as soon as I finish with the text itself. Just be patient and come back in the next few weeks.

The accession of Maria Theresa to the throne of the Habsburgs Maria Theresa. marks an important epoch in the history of Austria . For a while, indeed, it seemed that the monarchy was on the point of dissolution. To the diplomacy of the 18th century the breach of a solemn compact was but lightly regarded; and Charles VI. had neglected the advice of Prince Eugene to leave an effective army of 200,000 men as a more solid guarantee of the Pragmatic Sanction than the signatures of the powers . As it was, the Austrian forces, disorganized in the long confusion of the Turkish wars, were in no condition to withstand Frederick the Great , when in 1740, at the head of the splendid army bequeathed to him by his father, he invaded Silesia (see Austrian Succession, War of). The Prussian victory at Mollwitz (April 10, 1741) brought into the field against Austria all the powers which were ambitious of expansion at her expense:

Everyone thinks of Hungary as the land of the Huns, and they did come to this region of Europe in about the 5th century a.d. There is much to be told about that time in Hungary's history, but we are going to confine ourselves to the birth of the modern nation of Hungary which began with the reign of Saint Stephen. Who was Szt. Istvn, Hungary's first Christian king? Click here to read a brief biography of Magyarorszg's founding king.
Hungary has been a country for a thousand years, growing to its biggest size and influence in the late part of the Middle Ages, and beginning its decline from the early 1500s. In more recent times, previous to the First World War, it was part of Austria-Hungary, losing its monarchy in 1918. After the end of WW1, the Hungarian region of Transylvania was lost to Romania, and other parts lost to other neighboring countries with the Treaty of Trianon, effectively halving its size. It's easy to understand why the Hungarian people both in Hungary and the ethnic Hungarians in neighboring countries still grieve over this loss even to this day.
Post 1946 Hungary ended up with a communist government and by 1949 all opposition parties were eliminated. In 1955 Hungary became a member of the UN and on Oct. 23, 1956 widespread anticommunist demonstrations began demanding the reinstatement of Premier Imre Nagy and demanded the withdrawal of Soviet troops, although they (Soviets) intervened when clashes broke out between the demonstrators and the Hungarian militia. On Oct. 25, 1956 Nagy became Prime Minister, declaring Hungary a multiparty democracy and the country's neutrality. The revolution ended on Nov. 2, 1956 when the Soviet Army launched a massive offensive resulting in the deaths of 25,000 people in Budapest while another 200,000 fled the country. (Oct. 25 is now celebrated as a National Holiday) On June 16, 1958 Nagy was executed for treason under the newly installed Soviet puppet government.

Destinations Hungary Hungary Travel Guide Hungary History ... Hungary Travel Guide QuickBooker.com has attempted a small capsule of Hungary history to enable visitors to the country to get an overview of the country on their tour of the country. It is but a selective account of the history of Hungary as it would not be possible to outline about eleven-hundred years of history in one page. However, it is factually correct. A Brief on Hungary History The history of Hungary can safely be said to be the history of a confederation of seven nomadic tribes in the closing years of the 9th century. Around a few hundred thousand people comprising these tribes crossed into the Carpathian Basin from the east. As the area was sparsely populated and was conducive to their traditional role of an agricultural lifestyle, they decided to make it their home. The history of the Carpathian Basin can be said to have begun from this time when these people marked their entry into the region. Generally, it can be safely assumed that the influx of other races into the region did not have nay effect or bearing on the events subsequently. Early History
    Later History
    12th Century Onwards
Hungary had been warding off attempts from Byzantium in the south and the Holy Roman Empire in the west. This was almost up until 1204. In spite of meddling by them, Hungary did well. However, from here onwards to up until 1400, Hungary managed to see some peaceful quiet time with no threat from either direction. There was some slight damage from a Mongol attack (1241-42). Apart from this attack, there were some constant bouts of internal dissension around the 13th century. But, all this could not stop Hungary from witnessing a golden-age of well being and a standing of international repute.

Throughout much of its history, Hungary has been under the rule of a foreign government. At times, foreign rule was good for Hungary, at other times, awful. And for as long as there was foreign rule in Hungary, there were Hungarians fighting against it. The history of Hungary began almost 1,500 years ago, with a group of people called the Magyars. The Magyars were nomads who originally came from the land of nearby Russia. The Magyars settled in the land of Hungary in Eastern Europe around the 8th century AD. The Magyars were hunters and horsemen, and after settling around Hungary, became warriors. For more than a hundred years, the Magyars picked fights with people as far away as modern-day France. The Germans finally defeated the Magyars in 955, greatly reducing the Magyars' strength.
