North Carolina has a very appealing climate, and the weather here is a large reason why so many people are moving to live in this area. But we also have our fair share of severe weather, and it is critical to understand patterns in severe weather to protect the lives and property of our citizens. For this reason, the State Climate Office studies the history of severe weather in North Carolina. We not only study tropical cyclones, tornadoes, and winter storm climatologies, but we make this information available to everyone for planning, decision-making, and general education. Our website has a history of tropical storms that have passed through North Carolina, and we regularly give presentations on the threats of flooding and wind damage due to tropical cyclones. Such research and outreach help to inform the public and improve severe weather management and mitigation in North Carolina. A hurricane is a large rotating storm centred around an area of very low pressure with strong winds blowing at an average speed in excess of 74 miles per hour. The whole storm system may be up to 10 miles high and on average 500 miles wide. It moves forward like an immense spinning top, at speeds up to 20

    HURRICANES
    In Hawaii
HURRICANES form in areas of enhanced thunderstorms over warm, tropical oceans and are the most destructive storms on Earth ( Figure 1 ). The destructive fury of hurricanes comes from a combination of high winds, heavy rains, and abnormally high waves and storm tides. The deadliest hurricane in U.S. history occurred in Galveston, Texas in 1900 when an estimated 6000 people perished. One of the costliest natural disasters ever to hit the U.S. was Hurricane Andrew , which resulted in more than $30 billion in losses and 53 related deaths. In the western North Pacific, the storms that annually threaten the Philippines and Japan are called typhoons . Over the Indian Ocean the same type of storm is called a cyclone . In 1970 more than 300,000 people lost their lives in a storm surge and tide that struck Bangladesh. A storm surge is a rise in the level of the sea caused by effects of wind and low atmospheric pressure on the ocean.

Hurricane Lili Intercept Chase 2002 -
Interception, penetration, and observation of Hurricane Lili as it made
landfall in Southwestern Louisiana near Abbeville and New Iberia. The storm was an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 MPH that weakened to a category 2 with winds just over 100 MPH at time of landfall near 8 AM. The chase involved a long drive out of Florida on October 2 to the primary target area of Abbeville, Louisiana. During the evening of October 2, Jeff Gammons and Chris Collura met up with several chasers from the central US including Scott Blair. The "base" was a school in Abeville to observe the storm. Near midnight, Lili had 140 MPH+ winds and made a slight jog to the right so we all adjusted our target using highway 18 to a hotel in New Iberia. Lili continued to weaken over up-welled cooler water near the landfall point to 120 MPH, then 100 MPH at landfall at 8 AM on Oct 3.

Hurricane images are from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). DMSP operates day/night and dusk/dawn satellites. Daytime images are taken with sunlight striking perpendicular to the storm while dusk/dawn images have sunlight glancing across the top of the storm. Images from F12 and F14 are daytime images; those from the F13 satellite are dawn/dusk. Each hurricane is shown in two separate images showing views in the OLS visible near-infrared band and the OLS thermal-infrared band. The spatial resolution of the imagery used is 2.7 km. The thermal infrared images show the temperatures of the cloud tops, and ocean and land surfaces, while the visible-near infrared images show reflected sunlight during the day and reflected moonlight or man-made lights during the night.

The Most Intense Tropical Storms of 1998 Poster is 36X24, black and white. The 14 most intense tropical storms from the 1996 calendar year are shown with thermal infrared imagery from the DMSP Operational Linescan System. Although 1998 produced fewer tropical storms than the average, the storms were particularly intense. The destructive power of these storms was evident in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. Thousands of lives and homes were destroyed by flooding, landslides and wind. The roster of most intense tropical storms includes 4 typhoons, 5 cyclones, and 5 hurricanes. Each image is accompanied by the vital statistics of the storm, including maximum wind speed, date and time of the image, latitude and longitude of the eye, and duration of the storm.
