Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe, but it is not easily accessible on the earth.

Overview Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe, but it is not easily accessible on the earth. During the last 7 years, J.W.Tatman has developed new strategies to provide renewable sources of hydrogen for use in today's energy starved environment. In doing so, we have successfully completed to the testing of the prototype to implement the technology for new power plants as well as to retrofit existing natural gas and coal based power plants. The changes within the power supply market will probably be even more radical. Developments over the last hundred years have been characterized by the aim of building the largest possible units in order to benefit from the advantages of operation on a large scale in the form of higher efficiency and cost savings with respect to manpower and capital expenses. This has led to the expansion of the transmission lines to facilitate the transport of electricity, and the release of contaminants to the environment has become centralized. The expenses of expanding the power grid between the major producers and the consumers have been paid by the consumers.

This library page holds a collection of hydrogen energy resources. But please do NOT call Hydrogen a fuel! Hydrogen is only an energy
transport media. It is incapable of delivering net on-the-books BTU's
of energy. Just as with a flywheel or lead acid, you'll first have to fill
hydrogen with energy before you can empty it. Naturally, no non-nuclear means is known to make terrestrial hydrogen
that does not consume considerably more energy than it delivers. Thus,
terrestrial hydrogen is a "pollution amplifier" that INCREASES the
pollution of the underlying fundamental energy source. It is utterly ludicrous to claim that terrestrial hydrogen is in any way,
shape, or form "nonpolluting". Note that commercial hydrogen is nearly always produced through the reformation of methane. But the methane really has to want to reform. Please also note that because of the staggering loss of exergy , use of electrolysis for bulk hydrogen apps is a really, really dumb thing to do. It is the equivalent of exchanging two US dollars for one Mexican peso.

Hydrogen Energy
What Is Hydrogen?
The physical and chemical properties of hydrogen are what make hydrogen an ideal candidate for an energy source because it contains a large amount of energy in its chemical bond. Hydrogen is a gaseous element that is both odorless and colorless. Hydrogen is a stable element and can coexist with the element of oxygen until an exothermic reaction occurs from an addition of energy. This exothermic reaction will form water. Today, fuel cells are used to use hydrogen as an energy source to fuel items that we use every day. Fuel cells are engines that are developed to convert hydrogen energy into electrical energy. The hydrogen molecules are used to create a reaction with oxygen molecules in order to create the production of electricity within the fuel cell. Hydrogen Energy
Hydrogen energy is much like electricity in the way that it carries energy, however hydrogen energy can be stored very easily and can be transported to wherever it is needed. This gives it a great advantage over electricity, which cannot be easily stored or transported. Hydrogen energy can also be used in areas where electricity is not a possibility, such as in water. Hydrogen is known to be the lightest element on Earth, and because of it has such a low density, hydrogen energy is much lighter than its petroleum-based counterparts. Because there is no such thing as hydrogen gas on earth, it must be extracted from other substances such as water or other natural gases. Steam reforming and water electrolysis, or water splitting, are the two most common forms of extracting hydrogen atoms from water, biomasses, and other natural gas molecules. The large majority of hydrogen extraction occurs through steam reforming. This process is the most affordable means of separating the hydrogen atoms and it is used to separate hydrogen molecules.

Hydrogen Storage
In addition, hydrogen storage systems for off-board applications, such as the hydrogen delivery and refueling infrastructure and Power Parks, are also being investigated, which is coordinated with the hydrogen delivery program. This DOE Hydrogen Program activity is focused on advanced storage of hydrogen (or its precursors) on vehicles or within the distribution system.
High-Pressure and Cryogenic Tanks
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is developing and evaluating advanced concepts to store hydrogen at high pressures and cryogenic temperatures that improve volumetric capacity, conformability, and cost of storage.
Advanced Solid State and Liquid Materials
The Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Fossil Energy are working to develop innovative materials for reversible hydrogen storage including high surface area adsorbents, metal organic frameworks, and metal hydrides, as well as approaches that are regenerable off-board such as chemical hydrides and liquid carriers.
Basic Research
In the Office of Science's basic research program , the main focus will be on basic research needs in developing novel storage materials and methods. The broad class of storage materials to be studied includes various forms of complex hydrides and nanostructured materials.

Hydrogen
Up to: Sustainability FAQ Hydrogen is often advocated as an energy medium. Here are some relevant facts.
  • Hydrogen is the lightest of the elements with an atomic weight of 1.0. Liquid hydrogen has a density of 0.07 grams per cubic centimeter, whereas water has a density of 1.0 g/cc and gasoline about 0.75 g/cc. These facts give hydrogen both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that it stores approximately 2.6 times the energy per unit mass as gasoline, and the disadvantage is that it needs about 4 times the volume for a given amount of energy. A 15 gallon automobile gasoline tank contains 90 pounds of gasoline. The corresponding hydrogen tank would be 60 gallons, but the hydrogen would weigh only 34 pounds.
  • When hydrogen is burned in air the main product is water. Some nitrogen compounds may also be produced and may have to be controlled. Should greenhouse warming turn out to be an important problem, the key advantage of hydrogen is that carbon dioxide (CO ) is not produced when hydrogen is burned.
  • Since hydrogen is not available in significant quantities in nature in pure form, the main present way of getting hydrogen is steam methane reforming, and this will probably remain the most economical way as long as methane (natural gas) is available cheaply and in large quantities, and hydrogen is required only in small quantities. When the price of methane goes up to more than three times its present price because of scarcity, hydrogen will be obtained by splitting water H
