Run-of-River Hydropower Takes Hold
By Sam Hopkins
Monday, June 8th, 2009 The #1 threat to energy supply security that we face today is underinvestment, bar none. In 2009, exploration by the world's petroleum powers will drop even more to just 1/6 of the 2006 peak. But there are bountiful energy resources out there that you don't need to drill for. . . And water is the first and best of these. Hydropower is making a comeback, and it's hardly the same old "dam" story we've been told for generations. Last week in Wealth Daily 's sister publication Green Chip Review , we gave readers access to a full report on the top water-to-energy technology we're tracking, including the names of no fewer than 5 companies in on the uptrend. It's called run-of-river hydropower , and it will soon power hundreds of thousands of homes worldwide. Here's an excerpt, with a link to the full report below: Run-of-River Scores a Win in Canada
In the province of British Columbia, run-of-river power has been run through the political mill lately.

The Philippines Draws $10 Billion into Geothermal and Hydropower
By Sam Hopkins
Thursday, May 28th, 2009 Q: Which country is #2 in geothermal production, trailing only the U.S.? A: The Philippines. And in another few years, the power-packed archipelago could overtake Uncle Sam. The Philippines is drawing $10 billion over the next 10 years into its burgeoning renewable energy infrastructure... and that money will go toward more than just boosting an already impressive geothermal industry. Run-of-river hydropower companies will play an integral role in the island chain's move to double its clean energy capacity
With 1,081 potential hydroelectricity generation sites spread throughout the country's 7000+ islands, it's easy to see why the Philippines is part of a growing list of nations embracing run-of-river. "Mini-hydro," as some call it there, uses generation sizes between 101KW and 10MW to expand efficient electricity access with minimal transmission distances. Advertisement

Hydropower, Facts about hydropower energy, Renewable energy, Economy Watch
The power that remains in the moving water is commonly known as hydropower. This energy is captured and used for different purposes. The power of water was used by man from a long time.
In the early days, water mills and water wheels were very common. This power was also used for purposes like mining, sawing timber and a lot more. At present, hydropower is a major source of electricity. The hydroelectricity costs very low and it can be carried to a long way through cables.
For the purpose of converting kinetic energy into mechanical energy, the hydropower plants are established. These plants are set up near the waterfalls or the dams. The hydropower plants actually capture the energy that remains in the water and then produces electricity through it.

36. Hydropower Advantages - Harness The Clean And Reliable Energy Of Hydropower

Hydropower Advantages - Clean and Reliable Alternative Energy
Let's look at a few facts on hydropower advantages. 1. Hydropower is clean. Just look at the picture above. When I look at that picture I see something that is clean. And that is one of the main benefits that hydropower brings to the table. Hydropower plants do not emit any of the waste gases that contribute to air pollution, acid rain, and global warming. They do not cause noise pollution. No trucks, trains, barges, or pipelines are needed to bring fuel to the power plant site. Very similar to geothermal energy. 2. Renewable Hydropower energy is a renewable resource. it follows the water cycle of evaporation, condensation, precipitation. As long as there is precipitation through rain or snow, there will be water to run the turbines. 3. Hydropower is reliable. As long as there is water, there will be an energy source. As far as the powerplant goes, these are also constructed of a simple design which proves to be reliable over time. 4. Hydropower is extremely efficient.
