First gold to Ammann but no gold for Canada (3rd Roundup)
By Barry Whelan Feb 14, 2010, 5:52 GMT Vancouver - Swiss ski-jumper Simon Ammann of Switzerland clinched the first gold medal of the Vancouver Olympics on Saturday while hosts Canada are still waiting for that elusive home gold. Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer set an Olympic record, the 'wrong' South Korean Lee - Lee Jung-Su and not Lee Ho-Suk - claimed short track gold and surprise biathlete Anastastiya Kuzmina won a first ever Winter Games gold for Slovakia. The men's luge went ahead after some track modifications following the death in training the previous day of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili. But men's alpine skiing downhill was a victim at slushy Whistler Mountain as poor weather continued to be a headache for organizers. The race was postponed until Monday while the women's super combined was pushed back from Sunday to Thursday. 'It is the winter Games and they are subject to the whims of the weather,' said Renee Smith-Valade, vice president of communications for organizing committee VANOC.

Games are played with seven players on the ice for each side. The seventh position, commonly known as the "rover," will later be dropped from all organized hockey. The first Olympic Winter Games are held in Chamonix, France. The Canadian hockey team wins all five of its games, outscoring opponents 110-3. Needing a win or a tie to secure another gold medal, Canada plays the United States to a draw in a marathon final game. The match is called after three scoreless overtime periods. After four consecutive gold medals and a 20 straight victories, Canada loses to Great Britain and finishes second. Ten of the 12 British players live in Canada, including goaltender Jimmy Foster, who allows three goals in eight games.

The Olympic Games were originally intended for amateur athletes until 1988, and the National Hockey League (NHL) did not allow its players to compete until 1998. History The fastest growing sector of hockey over the past decade has been women’s hockey. After two very successful decades of international women’s play at the World Championship level, women’s hockey expanded into the Winter Olympic scene in 1998. Despite the Canadians’ undefeated record at the previous five World Championships, the United States stormed by the Canucks to capture the first-ever Olympic gold medal in women’s ice hockey. Olympic medals are uniquely manufactured for this one time event, including the event logo, further adding to its exclusivity for each participant. In addition, the composition of each medal accentuates its value, with amounts of gold, silver and bronze providing even more luster. ALL-TIME WINNERS

Olympic history The origins of ice hockey are unclear, but it is widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing ice hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia (Canada), played the earliest games. In 1879, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal organized competitions and developed the first known set of ice hockey rules. Ice Hockey tournaments have been staged at the Olympic Games since the 1920 Summer Olympics. A women's Ice Hockey tournament was added to the Olympic program for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. Ice Hockey in Russia Ice hockey is considered to have first appeared in Russia on December 22 1946, when the first games of the first Soviet ice hockey championship were played in the cities of Moscow, Leningrad, Riga, Kaunas and Arkhangelsk. In 1954, the Soviet hockey players made their debut at the World Championships and immediately became leaders in world ice hockey.
