41. Freezing Rain: Supercooled Droplets Freezing On Impact
Describes how freezing rain forms, with diagrams.
http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/cld/prcp/zr/frz.rxml
Freezing Rain supercooled droplets freezing on impact Ice storms can be the most devastating of winter weather phenomena and are often the cause of automobile accidents, power outages and personal injury. Ice storms result from the accumulation of freezing rain, which is rain that becomes supercooled and freezes upon impact with cold surfaces. Freezing rain is most commonly found in a narrow band on the cold side of a warm front , where surface temperatures are at or just below freezing. The diagram below shows a typical temperature profile for freezing rain with the red line indicating the atmosphere's temperature at any given altitude. The vertical line in the center of the diagram is the freezing line. Temperatures to the left of this line are below freezing, while temperatures to the right are above freezing. Freezing rain develops as falling snow encounters a layer of warm air deep enough for the snow to completely melt and become rain . As the rain continues to fall, it passes through a thin layer of cold air just above the surface and cools to a temperature below freezing. However, the drops themselves do not freeze, a phenomena called supercooling (or forming "supercooled drops"). When the supercooled drops strike the frozen ground (power lines, or tree branches), they instantly freeze, forming a thin film of ice, hence freezing rain.

Light rain and drizzle began to fall on the 14 th while temperatures near the ground were between 5 and 10 degrees below freezing. This type of precipitation continued falling for almost two days in numerous locations, after which a wet, clinging snow fell. Erie, Hancock, Sandusky, and Seneca counties seemed to bear the brunt of the storm. Precipitation totals in many locations were rather copious. Lima (Allen County) got 3.53 inches of liquid precipitation over the three day period

BY JENNIE YABROFF D IRECTOR A NG L EE What was your biggest challenge in making this film? Making this movie as a period piece about a period that was very recent in people's minds. I was in Taiwan [during the 1970s], so I hope I did all right. Otherwise, it could be the biggest embarrassment of my life. Also, the story is not linear, it's patchy, like a cubist painting, and there is always the possibility it will not hold together, it will fall apart. The tone is part satire, part serious drama, part tragedy, all mixed together, and it has to hit an emotional core. That's also very scary. You sound uncertain if you've accomplished your goals. Are you happy with the film?

    http://library.thinkquest.org/03oct/01027/icestorm.html
Ice Storm An ice storm is made up of freezing rain, which is a form of precipitation composed of rain that turns into ice upon contact with the ground. This kind of storm usually occurs when the ground is cold enough for ice, but the air is still warm enough for rain. There can be severe damage resulting from the force inflicted by ice storms, this damage includes damaged trees, dwellings, and high-tension cables. In 1998, a severe ice storm hit a large region of southeastern Ontario, southwestern Quebec, and upstate New York. Montreal was hit the hardest, with large areas of the city being deprived of power for more than a week. Almost a third of the trees in Mount Royal Park had to be felled, and forests, especially the economically important production of maple sugar in the region in particular, were devastated.
