Ice Storms
The term ice storm describes a storm that produces significant accumulation (.63 cm or more) of ice during freezing rain. To produce this amount of ice, accumulation usually has to occur for several hours. Significant ice storms are rare however they can transform roads into huge skating rinks and leave downed power lines and broken trees in their wake. Ice storms typically begin with snow and strong easterly wind conditions well ahead of an approaching warm front. The snow changes briefly to sleet and then to rain that freezes on impact coating all exposed surfaces with a growing layer of ice.
Impacts of Freezing Rain
Over head power and communications lines and trees are perhaps hit the hardest during an ice storm. The accumulation of ice on the lines and tree tucks and branches is a serious health and safety risk. Ice buildup on the lines and trees can cause them to break under the added weight.
Electrical power and other critical services could be disrupted for days. This will have an impact on the University as well as peoples homes.

Ice Storms - Winter Storms
What is a winter storm? How does an ice storm occur? What care should be taken if caught in a winter storm? Read on to find out. A winter storm is a form of precipitation that occurs at very cold temperatures. It can also be a rainstorm that occurs when the ground temperature is low to such an extent that the water solidifies to form ice. Late autumn, early spring or the chilled winters are the most probable periods for winter storms to occur. Due to the anomalous behavior of water, that we are all aware of, snow is less dense than water within a definite range of temperatures. At the temperatures just below freezing and still lower ones, water that can produce a certain amount of rain can produce about 10 times more snow.
An ice storm is one type of winter storm wherein we experience a freezing rain. One of the worst experiences of an ice storm in Canada was the one, which occurred in the January of 1998. It had deeply impacted large areas of many cities and disrupted life.
When a cloud carrying warm water rains above a layer of cold air, the phenomenon of an ice storm takes place. If it rains on a cold layer of air, the temperature of the raindrops falls below zero, but the rain might remain in the liquid form. When the droplets of water fall on a surface whose temperature is close to the freezing point, they freeze. The freezing rain shrouds the nature, and roads get canopied by smooth glaze ice and become slippery to walk or drive on. The cover of glaze ice on roads makes them completely lose friction resulting in serious accidents. The freezing of rivers can cause disruption in water transport.

Ice Storms - Winter's Worst Weather Disasters
Ice storms, although not the most spectacular form of severe weather, can result in personal injury and death, plus huge repair bills. This year alone, ice storms in Kansas and Georgia have disrupted power and transport, damaged homes, and caused considerable human suffering. Although significant events, they are well below the scale of disruption resulting from the Great Storm in eastern Canada and adjacent parts of the U.S. in January 1998 - described as Canada's worst natural disaster. The conditions leading to ice storms are not particularly unusual. What is out of the ordinary is the persistence of usually short lived periods of freezing rain to the point where the thickness of the ice severely disrupts transport and its weight causes tree branches to break and power lines and their supports to fail.
