Geography and Climate in Iceland
Iceland
is the second largest island in Europe, located between latitude 63°24´N and 66°33´N and between longitude 13°30´W and 24°32´W, close to the Arctic Circle. Iceland is about midway between New York and Moscow. Iceland has a total area of 103,000 square km (39,756 square miles). From north to south the greatest distance is about 300 km (185 miles), from west to east about 500 km (305 miles). The coastline is about 6,000 km (3,700 miles) and the shortest distances to other countries are 286 km (180 miles) to Greenland, 795 km (495 miles) to Scotland and 950 km (590 miles) to Norway. There are numerous islands around the coast, some of them inhabited. The largest being is the Westman Islands in the south, Hrísey in the north, and Grímsey on the Arctic Circle.
Iceland is a very young country, geologically, and the process of its formation is still going on. Iceland's interior consists entirely of mountains and high plateaus, devoid of human habitation. Its average height is 500 m above sea-level, the highest point being is Hvannadalshnúkur in the Öræfajökull glacier in south east Iceland, reaching a height of 2,119 m (6,950 feet).
Iceland has a relatively mild coastal climate. The average summer temperature in Reykjavik, the capital, is 10.6°C/51°F in July, with average highs of 24.3°C/76°F. The average winter temperature in Reykjavik is about 0°C/32°F in January.

Don't be too quick to say no. Think about this: Have you ever seen a fireworks show? There are lots of explosions in a fireworks show. Explosions are really amazing. There's a lot of force and a lot of noise, right? Many explosions can be deadly. Some explosions happen naturally. For as long as the earth has been around, it has been making explosions. Volcanoes are one kind of natural explosions. Geysers are another. Do you know what a geyser is? Like a volcano, a geyser is an explosion from underground. But geysers are made of water! All over the world, there is underground water. In some places, the earth's natural underground heat is close to this water. The heat boils the water, to many hundreds of degrees, and boom! The water explodes through vents out to the earth's surface. In Iceland, there are many geysers. In fact, Iceland invented the name for geysers. Many years ago, an exploding boiling spring was found in central Iceland. The locals gave it the name Geysir. From this name, all boiling springs around the world are called geysers.

Iceland Geography
Iceland is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, just south of the arctic cycle and about 185 miles (300 km) east of Greenland and about 620 miles (1,000 km) west of Norway. The second largest island in Europe, Iceland is 39,768 square miles (103,000 sq. km) in size, slightly smaller in area than Kentucky. Hyannadalshnukur at 6,952 feet (2,119 m) is the island’s highest peak. Iceland is not, as you might think, completely covered in ice. It is, in fact, much greener than its neighboring island of Greenland. Located on a geological hot spot on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is a volcanic island that has many active volcanoes. It is one of the most active volcanic countries in the world, averaging one eruption every five years. About 10 percent of the island is covered by glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest on the European continent. Iceland lies directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly heading in different directions. Even though Iceland culturally and geographically belongs to Europe, half of it lies on the American plate, which is drifting westwards at about 1-2 cm a year.
