The Iceland history of Settlers
Iceland history begins when the first people came to Iceland. They were Irish monks, who probably settled there in the eight century. There is, however, no archaeological evidence of any settlement by the Irish, and only a few passages in books offer documentary evidence of their residence in Iceland. They are said to have left the country on the arrival of the pagan Norsemen, who systematically settled Iceland in the period 870-930 AD. Iceland was thus the last European country to be settled.

The Iceland history of establishment of Althingi

In the year 930, at the end of the settlement period, Althingi (legislature and judiciary) was established and a legal code was adopted. Althingi met once a year in summer to adopt laws and render verdicts. There were also four local courts and a system of regional assemblies, led by the chieftains. On the lowest level of authority there were the "hreppar", or local districts, where the farmers assembled to conduct the affairs of the community. The establishment of Althingi marks the formation of the Icelandic Commonwealth, although it had no executive power. In about the year 1022, Iceland entered into its first treaty with a foreign country when it made a agreement with King Olafur Haraldsson (St Olaf) of Norway concerning the rights of Icelanders in Norway and Norwegians in Iceland. Iceland was settled in the late 9th and early 10th centuries, principally by people of Norse origin. In 930 A.D., the ruling chiefs established a republican constitution and an assembly called the Althingithe oldest parliament in the world. Iceland remained independent until 1262, when it entered into a treaty establishing a union with the Norwegian monarchy. Iceland passed to Denmark in the late 14th century when Norway and Denmark were united under the Danish crown.
In the early 19th century, national consciousness revived in Iceland. The Althingi had been abolished in 1800 but was reestablished in 1843 as a consultative assembly. In 1874, Denmark granted Iceland home rule, which again was extended in 1904. The constitution, written in 1874, was revised in 1903, and a minister for Icelandic affairs, residing in Reykjavik, was made responsible to the Althingi. The Act of Union, a 1918 agreement with Denmark, recognized Iceland as a fully sovereign state united with Denmark under a common king. Iceland established its own flag, but Denmark continued to represent Icelandic foreign affairs and defense interests.
German occupation of Denmark in 1940 severed communications between Iceland and Denmark. Consequently, Iceland moved immediately to assume control over its own territorial waters and foreign affairs. In May 1940, British military forces occupied Iceland. In July 1941, responsibility for Iceland's defense passed to the United States. Following a plebiscite, Iceland formally became an independent republic on June 17, 1944.

United Kingdom ABOUT ICELAND Iceland Country Briefs: Iceland as the name suggests is the abode of ice but on the same hand it is the hottest tourist destination in Europe today. Icelands first lure is its scenic splendor, its natural features such as glaciers, hot springs, geysers, active volcanoes, portentous peaks and big lava deserts. In the second place Iceland is also famous for its expansive landscape, folklore tradition and a rich history. Iceland is a borderless country. It is basically a volcanic island in the northern Atlantic Ocean between Greenland, Norway, Ireland, Scotland and The Faroe Islands. Iceland is ranked 107 th in the world on the basis of area. Iceland covers an area of around 103,000 square kilometers and its population is not more than 3.5 lakhs. The capital of Iceland is its largest city Reykjavik. On looking back we find that Iceland before 9 th and 12 th centuries Iceland was uninhabited and undiscovered. The immigrants from Scandinavia and from Ireland and Scotland were the first to discover Iceland.

      History of Iceland
      330 BC: Ultima Thule
330 BC An explorer named Pytheas sailed north from Marseilles (in modern France) to discover how far the world would reach in that direction. He navigated the British Isles and the northern seas and wrote about an island that he called Thule or Ultima Thule in his now lost work, On the Ocean . This island was six days north of Britain and one day from "the end of the world". The island he found is thought to have been Iceland.
874-930 AD: Irish Monks and the Settlement of Iceland
The first geographical document of the northern seas was written by an Irish monk named Dicuil, early in the 9th century. The geography book was called 'De mensura orbis terrae' (Concering the Measurement of the World) and in it he related his interviews with Irish priests, the 'Papas', who claimed to have sailed north to Thule and lived there from February to August each year. The Papas also confirmed Pytheas' story that after a day's journey north of the island they had come to 'frozen sea'. Dicuil was therefore the first man to document Thule as the uninhabitted island that had already been known to Irish monks in the latter part of the 8th century. The settlement of Iceland by the Vikings started in 874 and was largely over by 930 AD. It was precipitated largely by internal struggles in Norway between the barbarian King Harald the Fairhaired and former rulers. King Harald won a major victory late in the 8th century, after which he drove his enemies to the Scottish Isles, which he then later conquered. Many of these people fled onwards to Iceland - which by then was well-known amongst the Vikings - either directly from Norway or from the Scottish Isles, in order to evade Harald's rule.
