ICELAND HISTORY
In history of iceland , the earliest inhabitants of Iceland were Irish hermits, who left the island upon the arrival of the pagan Norse people in the late 9th century. The history of iceland has been preserved in the Icelandic sagas of the 13th century. A constitution was drawn up c. 930 created a form of democracy and provided for an Althing , the world's oldest practicing legislative assembly. After the unification of the kingdoms Norway, Sweden, and Denmark in 1397, Iceland came under the Danish control passed from the Norwegian rule in 1262-12654. In 1874, Icelanders obtained their own constitution, and in 1918, Denmark recognized Iceland, via the Act of Union, as a separate state with unlimited sovereignty. It remained, however, nominally under the Danish monarchy. During the German occupation of Denmark in World War II, history of iceland saw British, then American, troops occupying Iceland and using it for a strategic air base. While officially neutral, Iceland cooperated with the Allies throughout the conflict. On June 17, 1944, after a popular referendum, the Althing proclaimed Iceland an independent republic. In the year 1970

Settlement and Subjection
Iceland may be the Ultima Thule Harold I Olaf I , although paganism seems to have survived for a time. These events are preserved in the literature of 13th-century Iceland, where Old Norse literature reached its greatest flowering. (Modern Icelandic is virtually the same language as that of the sagas.) Politically, Iceland became a feudal state, and the bloody civil wars of rival chieftains facilitated Norwegian intervention. The attempt of Snorri Sturluson Aresson ; the Reformation brought new intellectual activity. The 17th and 18th cent. were, in many ways, disastrous for Iceland. English, Spanish, and Algerian pirates raided the coasts and ruined trade; epidemics and volcanic eruptions killed a large part of the population; and the creation (1602) of a private trading company at Copenhagen, with exclusive rights to the Iceland trade, caused economic ruin. The private trade monopoly was at last revoked in 1771 and transferred to the Danish crown, and in 1786 trade with Iceland was opened to all Danish and Norwegian merchants. The exclusion of foreign traders was lifted in 1854.

Iceland : History
Iceland was settled in the late 9th and early 10th centuries, principally by people of Norse origin. In 930 A.D., the ruling chiefs accomplished a republican constitution and an assembly called the Althingithe oldest parliament in the world. Iceland remained independent until 1262, when it entered into a treaty establishing a union with the Norwegian monarchy. Iceland passed to Denmark in the late 14th century when Norway and Denmark were united under the Danish crown. In October 1946, the Icelandic and U.S. Governments agreed to terminate U.S. responsibility for the defense of Iceland, but the United States retained certain rights at Keflavik. Iceland became a charter member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949. After the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in 1950, and pursuant to the request of NATO military authorities, the United States and Iceland agreed that the United States should again be responsible for Iceland's defense. A bilateral defense agreement signed on May 5, 1951, is the authority for U.S. military presence in Iceland. Iceland is the only NATO nation with no standing military of its own. Last updated : Nov 2009 Iceland History The traditional side of Iceland is obvious, as well as the Icelander's repute as hardy and proud. Indeed, much of the attraction surrounding Iceland resides with the Icelanders themselves. Their descendents propagated the notion of the 'Viking poet' , as unveiled in their heroic sagas, an stimulating brew of brute force and sensitivity. In the mid 13th century, the islanders submitted to the authority of the King of Norway, and when Norway came under the control of Denmark in 1380, Iceland did too. In 1814, Norway became independent, however Iceland remained a Danish territory. In 1840, Iceland was granted its own constitution, effectively allowing internal

Iceland History
The first inhabitants of Iceland are believed to be Irish monks since the 8th century but, had to leave as the pagan Norsemen started settling down since 870 AD. According to Landnamabok, which was written in the 12th century, Ingo fur Arnarson, a chieftain from Norway, was the first man to settle in Reykjavik, now the capital of Iceland, along with the members of his family in 874. In the course of over 60 years, the Vikings from Scandinavia who brought some Celtic people along with them made Iceland their home and towards concluding stages of the settlement phase, a constitutional code of law known as Albingi was adopted. In 1000 AD, a large population of Icelanders adopted Christianity. When the Kalmar Union was formed in 1397, Iceland got under the sovereign rule of Denmark. The situation in Iceland went deteriorating as the Danish kings started reforming the church, thus increasing their control over the church and confiscated its wealth. An absolute monarchy and oppressive monopoly in the trade was established and all the power was transferred to Copenhagen, proving profitable for the Danish kings. Towards the latter half of the eighteen century, Albingi faced suspension. However, the year 1843 saw the reinstation of Albingi and 1854, the abolition of the trade monopoly. Iceland got its own control of the finance from the Danish king in the year 1874, while it was celebrating its 1,000 years of settlement and in 1904 got its own home rule and got independence in 1918 but not without being amalgamated with Denmark under one Danish king. The British forces occupied Iceland in 1840, replaced by the American troops in 1941 through the agreement between the governments of Iceland and America.

History of Iceland
The first people known to have inhabitated Iceland were Irish monks or hermits who came in the eighth century, but left with the arrival of the pagan Norsemen, who systematically settled Iceland in the period 870 - 930 A.D. Iceland was thus the last European country to be settled. The main source of information about the settlement period in Iceland is the Landnámabók (Book of Settlements), written in the 12th century, which gives a detailed account of the first settlers. According to this book Ingólfur Arnarson was the first settler. He was a chieftain from Norway, arriving in Iceland with his family and dependents in 874. He built his farm in Reykjavík, the site of the present capital. During the next 60 years or so, viking settlers from Scandinavia, bringing some Celtic people with them, spread their homesteads over the habitable areas. In the year 930, at the end of the Settlement period, a constitutional law code was accepted and Alþingi established. The judicial power of Alþingi was distributed between four local courts and a type of a Supreme Court held annually at the national assembly at Þingvellir.

For many years, this island was a place to hide. It later became a home base for explorations to far-off places. For many years, the world was greatly affected by this island. The name of this island is Iceland. The first people known to live in Iceland were monks from the nearby island nation of Ireland. The monks thought of Iceland as a kind of hideaway, where they could practice their religion alone. The monks stayed there until the 9th century AD. About that same time, there were conflicts in Scandinavia. These conflicts caused many people to flee. Many people from Norway left to settle in Iceland. This happened during the 9th and 10th centuries.
