However, identifying birds isn't always easy and can seem overwhelming to the beginner. As an experienced bird watcher, I have many tips that can help you in the identification of your feathered friends. Read on to discover helpful hints that will propel you to an expert when it comes to identifying birds.
    Tip #1 for Identifying Birds
The first thing you'll need when you want to identify birds is a good pair of binoculars. There is no substitution for this must have item. You need to be able to view the bird up close in order to make a proper identification.
There are many great brands of bird watching binoculars on the market. Find a pair within your budget that is comfortable for you. You don't have to have the most expensive pair of binoculars for identifying birds, just a pair that is right for you.
    Tip #2 for Identifying Birds
The second thing you'll need to identify birds is a good field guide with vivid pictures. Illustrations are nice but photos are recommended. Photos will have more detail than a hand drawn picture. Find a field guide that is easy for you to use and understand. Don't worry about finding the best guide for identifying birds, just the best guide for you.

A Quick Guide To Identifying Birds
There are so many distinct avian species that identifying birds can be enormously confusing, and the watching of them very time consuming. There are worse ways that one could choose to spend their time, however, and watching birds has become one of the most popular hobbies in the United States. We can begin the process of identifying birds that we see by breaking them into their subcategories. This will help you to at least have an idea of what to look for in the informational realm. If you know that a bird is from the perching category, for instance, then you will have an easier time tracking down it’s full name and description, as well as what he eats and whether or not he migrates. We can start with identifying birds in the water fowl family. This would include any type of wild game bird who uses the water for habitat, protection, and for a food source. Ducks, geese, swans, and loons fall into this category, along with countless other water dwellers. There are also ways of identifying birds of the ground dwelling type, as they rarely roost and hatch their broods on the forest or field floor. This group includes grouse, quail, and partridge. These birds can all fly, but they choose to use this gift only when absolutely necessary. Panicky situations, for instance, such as being flushed from a bush by a dog will cause ground dwelling fowl to take flight. This fearful jaunt is usually clumsy and can bring the bird to injury.

    Identifying Birds
Summary: Learning to identify birds can be great fun and a real challenge. For those who have watched with exasperation as experienced birders identified dozens of flitting shadows on the wing, now it's your turn to partake in the adventure. You have certainly seen pictures of people with eyes glued to binoculars searching treetops for an elusive bird. You, too, can join in one of America’s fastest growing hobbies; bird watching. Getting started is simple. Begin with a field guide such as Peterson's Guide to North American Birds or The National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America or All of the Birds of North America ; all good choices for a beginner. All of the Birds of North America has especially nice silhouettes of birds and careful discussions of such essentials as beak shape, feeding habits, habitat and other essentials.
You need something to bring your birds up close and personal so you can select from an assortment of field glasses. Choices will be dictated by conditions. For example, you're visiting the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to see shore birds. Many shore birds are still feeders that move very slowly. Once you sight them in your lens, they stay put. Use higher power binoculars here. A 10x power lens with a relatively narrow field of vision is fine. Spotting scopes can also be used for birding. High-powered optics are more expensive, have narrower fields of vision, are less mobile and heavier, but in an area easily reachable by car, with less traveled paths and faraway birds, this is a workable trade-off.

    Identifying Bird Groups by Silhouette
Birds in the same general group often have the same body shape and proportions, although they may vary in size. Silhouette alone gives many clues to a bird's identity, allowing birders to assign a bird to the correct group or even the exact species.
In the above illustration are 23 different birds. How many can you recognize just by their silhouettes? Look carefully - don't miss the ones hiding in the leafy tree!
    Pay attention to the following:
    • body shape proportions of the head, legs, wings, and tail shape and length of the bill

          Steps Edit
        • Categorize the bird. There are 8 different categories that they can go into. As soon as you see the bird you should try to put it into on of these categories. The 8 categories are:
          • Ducks and duck-like birds Gulls and terns Long-legged waders Shorebirds and small waders Fowl-like birds Birds of prey Flycatchers Warblers
Size matters. You should pay attention to how big or small the bird is. You can use size relativity to get a general idea. Size relativity refers to being bigger or smaller than a sparrow, robin, crow, or pigeon, per say. Study silhouettes.

      Parts of a Bird Body
Learning to identify birds is fun and frustrating. A field guide can help you attach a name to most of the birds you see. Field guides are books with pictures and descriptions of the birds. A field guide typically shows birds of just one country or even one region of a country. You will soon learn that many of the birds you see just can't be identified with 100% certainty. But with practice, you should at least be able to narrow your ID down to the correct family was it a Sparrow or a Thrush? You are about to discover that birders seem to have given a name to every inch on a bird's body. Do you know where to find a bird's wing bars, primaries, superciliary and malar stripe? These diagrams will help: Detailed Diagrams of the Parts of the Bird Body Glossary Tips to make identifying birds easier:
First ask "How big is the bird?" Is it as big as a sparrow, a robin, a pigeon, a chicken or an ostrich? Is the bird fat or skinny, long or short. Look at each part of the bird. Is its bill short or long, thick or thin, curved or straight? How about the tail? What shape is it? Is it forked? Are the bird's wings pointed or curved, long or short?

    What Is Plumage
The term plumage refers to a bird's feathers, including the color and pattern those feathers produce. Some birds have a variety of plumages during an annual cycle, while other birds sport the same plumage throughout the year. While plumage is, in many cases, the easiest way to identify birds, it can be more challenging as birds change plumages or adopt color variations that are less familiar to birders.
    Types of Bird Plumages
There are several basic plumage that many bird species exhibit throughout the year.
