Identification Basics
Just as you know your friends by their voices or physical characteristics, the experienced birder knows a species of bird by a glimpse of its tail or the shape of its bill. These particular clues are called field marks. Other common field marks include size, shape, habitat, voice, and behavior. The best way to become familiar with field marks is to start watching the birds in your front yard or local park. Spend time observing the bird while it is in sight, then go to the field guide to identify it. Note as many field marks as time will allow. Once you have made note of the obvious field marks, you can easily refer to a field guide to identify the bird. A notebook for recording field marks and a pair of binoculars will help with identification.
The Main Field Marks to Note Are:
  • Size Try to get an idea of the size of the bird. A familiar bird such as the American robin or a set object nearby, can be helpful comparisons to judge the relative size. Shape What shape is the body, tail, bill and wings? Note relative size, width, length and thickness to name a few. For example, is the bill cone shaped or pointy, larger or smaller than a pencil tip?

How to ID Birds
Are you amazed at how quickly birders can identify birds? Actually, it's just like getting to know your human neighbors. When you move into a new neighborhood everyone is a stranger, but soon you recognize people based on their characteristics, such as habits, shape, styles of walking, and the places where you see them.
Paying attention to individual differences can help you identify birds, too. You can recognize many birds simply by noting their shapes, even if seen only in silhouette. Other useful characteristics are a bird's posture, size, flight pattern, and the kind of habitat in which the bird was seen.
Start by learning to identify general groups of birds warblers, flycatchers, hawks, owls, wrenswhose members all share certain similarities. As your observation skills improve, familiarize yourself with the field markscolored or patterned areas on the bird's body, head, and wingsthat help distinguish species.
Use the following features to help you:

Identifying Birds
Identifying birds is not only a good method to pass time, it also helps one to learn about the different species of birds and their mannerisms. Use these helpful guidelines for identifying birds the next time you go birding. There are thousands of species of birds in nature, each having its own unique characteristics. Birds fill the air with music by their sweet chirps. Though the sounds of many birds may seem alike, the truth is that there are different types of birds . There are many techniques that help in identifying birds. Bird watching , nowadays known as birding, has become a popular hobby among the young and old alike. It is very interesting to note the behavior of different birds. Take a stroll in your neighborhood or go to a place where you can come across a wide variety of birds and hone your skills.
How to Identify Birds
Identifying birds may seem a daunting task as there are different kinds of birds . But it is also interesting to note the various features of these birds. To start with, learn about the group that the bird you are watching belongs to. The next step is to familiarize with the general characteristics of the bird. Given below are some guidelines that you can use to identify birds in your locale;
Shape and Size
The first step towards identifying birds is to observe the physical features of the bird. Size and shape are an essential factor for identification. The first step to notice the difference between size and shape is to observe the silhouette of the bird. A silhouette is helpful when it comes to identifying the size of the bird, body proportions and postures. The next step is to find out ways to determine the size of the bird and notice the various differences in the telltale parts of the bird like its bill, tail and wings. It is trickier to judge a bird by its size than the shape. Compare the bird you are observing with other birds and notice the difference in the size and shape in them. After taking note of these two factors, the next to be observed is the size and shape of the other parts of the body like the shape of the bill, wing structure, and the length of their feet.

    How to identify birds
Bird identification can be difficult, even for experienced birders, and many discussions occur during group walks and camps on this subject. Reference books are most useful and our separate reference page details a range of books that you may be able to find at your local library to learn about and to identify our Australian birds. In addition, Birds Queensland has a number of aids which may help both beginners and experienced birders to know exactly which bird they have seen.
    Bird identification courses
Birds Queensland runs courses in bird identification which discuss the main features of birds, and show the points of difference between similar species. There are two levels of course, one for beginners, and an advanced course for more experienced birders. Each course includes two evening classes, and two week-end outings, with experienced birders to help with location and identification of birds. The courses cost $25 each.
Use of illustrated brochures and websites
Birds Queensland publishes two brochures to help in identifying birds:
