Iditarod
The Iditarod has proven to be an event where female athletes can compete on an equal footing with men. Libby Riddle was the first of a number of successful female Iditarod racers when she won the event in 1985. Given the distance to be traveled by the musher and their dog team, the concept of strength to weight ratio becomes of critical importance; a female driver, who typically will weigh less than a male driver, presents a smaller mass to be transported over the race distance. Strength to weight ratio is also of importance in the selection and efficiency of the sled dogs used in the Iditarod. Breeds such as the Siberian Husky and the Malamute, dogs that are native to cold weather climates, have proven to be effective Iditarod racers. Most dogs in the Iditarod weigh less than 55 lbs, yet they possess both the strength and the stamina to maintain high speeds in the most challenging of conditions. The dogs are kept fit through an off season training program that involves pulling sleds and carts on wheels and similar exercises. The psychology of handling the sled dogs during the race is of utmost importance if the team is to complete the Iditarod course. The sled dogs tend to be gregarious animals that are intensely loyal to the musher. The dogs perform best in an environment where they perceive the activity to be fun, as opposed to work. Many of the Iditarod dogs compete in the races for several years, a testament to both the handling and the nature of the these breeds.

The race commemorates a medical mission undertaken by dog sled during a 1925 diphtheria epidemic. First held in 1973, the Iditarod is run in March and draws some 50 drivers and teams, with the winner taking 9-11 days to complete the course. Bibliography See G. and L. Alaska has a lot of different climate zones. Alaska has glaciers, deserts, tundra, volcanoes, and lots of wild animals. Across Alaska we have three million lakes and the highest mountains you will ever find in North America. Alaska has a lot of wild places with moose, polar bear, grizzly and and black bears, caribou, seal, whales, sea lions, sea otters, foxes, wolves and nesting migratory birds. Alaska doesn't have very many people, but has more coastline than all the other states combined. Alaska also has huge oil, coal and natural gas reserves. We also have the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Iditarod The Last Great Race A Thematic Unit which can incorporate Social Studies, Math, Reading and Writing The Iditarod : Last Great Race to Nome, can be a fully integrated curriculum unit which uses the Iditarod Sled Dod Race as its focus and central theme. The unit is designed to enhance the student's awareness and appreciation for the annual sled dog race across the state of Alaska. As a multi-faceted curriculum, the students will be involved in a variety of activites to become more knowledgable about the race, Alaska culture and geography, and the people and animals who participate in the competition. Technology Integration Activities: Pre-Race: Friendly Letter: Students reasearch a musher participaring in the race, write a letter of support (or email) to a musher. Many mushers respond to letters which will make the experience more meaningful for the students. Once the race begins, the student will track the progress of his or her musher. Alaska Brochure: Students use the Internet to research areas of Alsaka. Once information is gathered, students create a travel brochure using catchy phrases and descriptive vocabulary to entice visitors to come and visit their vacation spot. Graphics from the Internet can be captured and imported into the student's project. ABC Scavenger Hunt: Students visit various Iditarod sites to match each letter of the alphabet with a word which relates to the Iditarod, Alsaka, etc.

programming@wnetstation.wnet.org Dear Mr. Baker, Below is a copy of a letter written by one of my colleagues concerning the Iditarod presentation on PBS. However, it mirrors my own thoughts on your presentation! What it does not say is how disappointed I am in the biased information offered in this piece of television rubbish! In a letter of response from you on Nov. 8, 1999, you assured me that you would be addressing the controversial issues. When you read the letter below, perhaps you will see where you have failed your viewing audience in the Iditarod story. Your presentation of the Iditarod is disgusting and a black eye for PBS programming. You are responsible for the information you put forth for the youth to view. This program was disgraceful, full of half truths and a disservice to your viewing audience! I can say with easy assurance that I will not support PBS from this point forward. I assure you, Sir, that I am not alone in this decision . Angry and disgusted

Welcome to the Plettner Kennels
Lynda Plettner, owner of Plettner Kennels, is a 11 time finisher of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. She came to Alaska after training horses in CA for twenty years. Because of her love of animals, the shortage of horses but abundance of sled dogs, Lynda turned her training skills to the dog world. Her knowledge, patience, and perseverance earned her a very respectable position of finishing twentieth in the 2002 Iditarod. The 2002 Iditarod was Lynda’s best ever, not only because of receiving the “Most Improved Musher Award”, which moved her from sixty-sixth place in 2001 to twentieth in 2002, but because of receiving the prestigious and most coveted “ Leonhard Seppela Humanitarian Award”. This award is presented by the veterinarians working on the Trail, and is given to the musher with the healthiest, happiest and biggest dog team arriving in Nome. Lynda says that she had “thirteen barking, happy, line pounding dogs at the finish line”. This indeed was her best experience of her mushing career and she is looking forward to many more. Lynda loves participating in the Iditarod because she enjoys crossing the state of Alaska “on a vacation” with a dog team. There is no better way to see, feel, taste and smell the beauty of the state. She loves being alone out in the wilderness with her beloved and trusted companions, facing the challenges together.

    Iditarod
Subject Index - Fun and Informational 1. The Iditarod is know as the "Last Great Race on Earth." 2. It is a race over 1150 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. 3. It takes place in Alaska with temperatures that reach far below zero, and with winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility. The long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs also make this race very difficult and dangerous. 4. In 1925, part of the Iditarod Trail became a life saving highway for Nome, Alaska. The city was stricken with diphtheria and serum had to be brought in. Dog mushers and their faithful hard-driving dogs were the ones to get the medicine through to Nome. 5. The race begins in Wasilla, Alaska. The race route is alternated every other year, one year going north through Cripple, Ruby and Galena, the next year south through Iditarod, Shageluk, Anvik. It ends in Nome where a hero's welcome is the custom for racers 1 through 61 who finish. 6. The mushers compete for $69,000 and a new truck.
