Iguanas A pair of rhinoceros iguanas, their young and two green iguanas enjoy basking in the warm sunshine at the Australia Zoo, far from their native homes in the Americas. Rhino , a 23-year-old rhinoceros iguana, is one of the zoo's most beloved lizards. He loves a scratch and massage and will stand up on all fours just to make sure you don't miss any spots. Elle , a 10-year-old rhinoceros iguana, is Rhino's girlfriend. Elle loves eating all the hibiscus flowers when Rhino is not around. Much to the zoo's delight she is also a mother to some very cute little rhinos. Rhinoceros iguanas live in the dry, rocky coastal forests of Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. They spend their days foraging for cactuses and other thorny plants, as well as fruits and flowers. Though generally herbivorous as adults, juveniles love insects and adults will eat any small animal that they can easily overpower. The rhinoceros iguana generally walks with a ponderous, cumbersome gait, its head held high, scouting for forage. When in danger it can retreat very quickly, and may even trash its tail and bite in defense.

Plight of the iguana: Studies of the Galapagos population show that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. January 7, 2000
Web posted at: 1:12 p.m. EST (1812 GMT) By Environmental News Network staff Nature MESSAGE BOARD Evolution In two studies of Galapagos marine iguanas, one spanning 18 years and the other occupying eight years, scientists found that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. "Many people working with amphibians have seen this phenomenon but have not reported it because they don't believe it, or because the thinking is that vertebrates can't shrink," said Judy Stamps, a professor of evolution and ecology at the University of California at Davis. "In 1997-98, the animals had shrunk too much to ignore," he said. "We thought this couldn't be an artifact, so we plotted out the data. It turned out to be very interesting."

Iguanas Feeding Guide
Recent studies indicated that the iguana iguana or known as the rainforest common green iguana is one of the few completely herbivorous (plant-eating) lizard in its natural habitat. Therefore, the information on iguana care and its food supply should be based on that aspect. It is important then, to consider physiology, environment and diet in order to keep an iguana in the picture of good health.
Iguana management is dependent on the understanding of the digestive system of a pet. They are considered Hind-Gut fermenters which means the general well being is directed by the lower intestinal tract. The lower intestinal tract is responsible for vitamin production, fatty acid production, water reabsorption, etc. It is essential then that, even in juvenile iguanas, a crude fiber of 14-16% should be observed to satisfy this requirement. Older iguanas should receive a greater proportion of 16-18% in their diets.
It is noteworthy to caution that many iguanas suffer for malnutrition and inappropriate management resulting in unwanted, sick or abandoned lizards. It is difficult to get an accurate guide for care since many recommendations are based on personal experience and not scientific research. So the best way to approach it is to examine the wild iguana's natural habitat and food supply.

52. Iguana
J.A. Rivas describes research into green iguanas and provides details of some published articles.
http://pages.prodigy.net/anaconda/iguana.htm
Research on Green iguana, Iguana iguana In 1988 I started my undergraduate research by studying the diet of green iguanas. In the interest of studying their diet without hurting or killing the animals, I caught the animals in the field, climbing the trees where they lived or chasing them down when they were on the ground. I developed a method to studying their diet by performing a stomach wash to the animals and obtained the information of what they have eaten lately. Luckily the iguanas do not chew the leaves or flowers which allowed me to identify diet to the species level in most cases. My work was followed by one of my colleagues (Cesar Molina). Cesar and I caught a total of 365 animals of all sizes and identified 125 different items in the diet. I continued studying iguanas for five more years. I studied population dynamics, sex differences , tick infestations, predation antipredator social behavior nesting success, and farming . My experience with iguanas lead me to fall in love for them and for all the secrets that they have on hold for us to uncover in the future. For example one of the the most interesting results of our research is the finding that neonate iguanas have extremely complicated defensive mechanisms to avoid predation involving group-based strategies that may result in the voluntary sacrifice of some individuals for the benefit their sibblings. In particular some males might attrack toward themselves the attention of predators buying, this way, their sisters the possibility to survive and reproduce. Kin selection as well as the complicated dynamics of differntial survival, mating and reproduction of males and females seem to be involved in the explanation of this phenomenon; but the last words is still far from being said (

GALAPAGOS IGUANAS
Iguana is the common name for a large new world lizard. "Iguana" a Spanish word of Indian origin also serves as the scientific name for the family. Iguanas are diurnal. They have distinctive eyelids, external eardrums, dewlaps (throat pouches), each limb has 5 toes with sharp claws allowing them to climb. Unlike most lizards, iguanas are vegetarians. The Galapagos Islands are home to Marine Iguanas Land Iguanas , a hybrid mix of the whose father's are marine iguanas and mother's are land iguanas as well as the newly discovered Pink Iguana.
GALAPAGOS MARINE IGUANAS (Amblyrhynchus cristatus)
Growing to approximately 3 ft (1 m) in length these sea-going Iguanas exist only in the Galapagos Islands. Living on the black lava shore rocks they have developed into efficient swimmers feeding off shore mostly on marine algae and seaweed. The cold waters of the Galapagos provide both the necessary food for the marine iguanas and its most deadly threats. The cold temperatures can immobilize an iguana if it remains in the water too long. Until the arrival of man, marine iguanas only threats were that of larger fish and sharks encountered while swimming. When marine iguanas are not feeding they seek safety and warmth of the land. In the 19th century when Charles Darwin visited the islands he found thousands of marine iguanas living along the rocky shore. He picked one up and threw it into the ocean it instantly swam back to the shore. This was repeated several times and the iguana continued to seek the safety of the shore when it could have easily swum off to escape Darwin.
