2. green iguana juvenile black spinytail iguana ( Ctenosauras similis ) at Bill Baggs Park on Key Biscayne, FL, USA. Last year I only saw green iguanas at Bill Baggs and they were everywhere. Now I only saw spinytail iguanas in moderate numbers. I know an eradication effort was taken to try to get rid of the exotic iguans. I guess that it was quite successful in ridding the park of green iguanas. I wonder if that is the reason that the spinytail iguanas are not common. Population release? Spinytail iguanas prefer rocky habitats, while green iguanas prefer trees and water. I have never seen a spinytail flee to water or climb a tree to escape. They always find crevices or drains to hide in. Conversely, green iguanas mostly flee by entering the water or by climbing a tree.

Green Iguana Breeding Program
Belize Zoo
For more than 7000 years, green iguanas (Iguana iguana) have been hunted for their meat and eggs in Central and South America. Iguana are such a common food item they are known locally as the bamboo chicken. Today, wild populations have fallen to the point where they are now an endangered species. Hunting practices are part of the reason for a decline of wild iguana in Central America.
Iguana Farm
1) mature females are captured before they lay their eggs
2) eggs are layed in artificial nests
3) eggs are moved to incubators
4) hatchlings emerge
5) hatchlings are moved to enclosure The green iguana has a predictable reaction to danger. When frightened, the iguanas drop from the trees into the water and wait until the predator leaves. People have learned this behavior, and dive into the water and catch the iguana easily. Another problem is that the favorite iguanas to hunt are mature females before they lay their eggs. This practice reduces the number of wild females that are old enough to reproduce. To protect wild iguanas and still provide Belizeans with an important food product

Who Killed the Iguanas?
John Woram
Originally appeared in No. 50, 1991. But eventually the war does end and everybody gets to go home. Some years later scientists arrive and note the absence of land iguanas. They recall the island was occupied by American troops during the big one and set down the following observations:
  • Iguanas were here before the war, Americans were here during the war, iguanas are missing after the war.

But could the servicemen themselves be expected to take their orders as seriously as did their president and the Smithsonian? In retrospect, perhaps they took them a little bit too GOATS MAY BE BANNED FROM PX BEER GARDEN It seems that some (human) newcomers had complained to the PX officer about the presence of the beasts, much to the disgust of the old-timers, who regarded the goats as fixtures. No action was taken, pending further study of the matter ( Goat's Whisker 1945). And so, along with their PX privileges, the animals prospered under a well-intentioned but misguided Uncle Sam. Alas, Schmitt's early recommendation to encourage goat hunting had apparently not reached the island. And as a result, a 1946 inspection report from Major-General Harmon to the Chief of Staff noted that

Iguanas are a type of lizard . There are many different species of iguanas. These cold-blooded animals have a life span of about 15-20 years in captivity. Habitat and Distribution : Iguanas are found in many different habitats in North and South America. For example, the Green Iguana Anatomy : Iguanas vary in color from green to brown to yellow (their coloring lets them blend into the background). These reptiles have a long tail, eyelids, and four sprawling legs. A row of spines runs along the back from the head to the tail. Iguanas have a dewlap, a loose fold of skin under the neck that can be extended to signal to other iguanas. On the top of the head, iguana have a "third eye," a patch of pale, scaly skin that senses light (but does not see images). Iguanas use their powerful, clawed legs to swim and climb trees. The biggest iguanas (green iguanas) average 5-6 feet long; the smallest species of iguanas are less than a foot long.

So You Want a Pet Goldfish – Children’s Pet House
There are plain goldfish, fancy goldfish spotted gold fish, and black goldfish!
Goldfish need a lot of space. They don’t like those silly little goldfish bowls you see at the carnival. You need a rectangular fish aquarium.
The fish aquarium has the right type and size of opening so that there is plenty of surface space coming into contact with the air. The little fish bowl does not have enough of an opening or space coming into contact with the air. The large aquarium will increase the amount of oxygen in the water.
Fish need air. They breathe different than we do but they still need to breathe. We will learn how fish breathe and swim latter on! We will do an experiment to find out how fish can swim to the top of the tank and the bottom of the tank. A fish aquarium can also be called a fish tank. Did you know that a goldfish can live to 25-years if you take good care of the goldfish?

If you are interested in adopting or rescuing any iguana, please make sure you learn as much as possible about the proper care they require. Even experienced iguana owners can learn more and we urge all iguana owners to continue learning more. We strongly urge you to read the information on the following pages before you consider adopting or rescuing any iguana....
The iguanas available for adoption or rescue are listed on our adoption board The Green Iguana Society is not a shelter. We are solely a group of on-line volunteers. We do not personally take in iguanas as a part of our affiliation with GIS. We do not have a veterinarian on our team. We have no regular source of income, and cannot assist individuals or organizations with any of their expenses. All iguanas listed are in the care of either their current owners or a temporary foster parent. All iguanas require an adoption application to be filled out and submitted to us. We will forward your completed application to the owner/caretaker of the iguana you are interested in. Some owners have asked us to screen potential adopters, for which we will forward completed applications along with our comments, thoughts, and suggestions, based on the answers provided in the application. The Green Iguana Society would like to thank you for helping us find homes for these iguanas.
NOTE ON SHIPPING IGUANAS: Shipping iguanas has become extremely difficult and the Green Iguana Society highly recommends that people adopt an iguana that is within driving distance.

    Iguana Diseases Requiring
    Veterinary Attention
    Abscesses

Bacterial infections may settle in 1 or more areas and result in abscess formation. Reptile pus is not liquid, but is of a cheesy, sometimes rubber like consistency. Consequently, treatment of abscesses by a veterinarian involves opening up the pus filled abscess and manually cleaning it out. Antibiotics are then infused directly into the cavity and also given by injection. Bacterial infections of reptiles require injectable antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria from the body as rapidly as possible. When therapy is delayed or insufficient, bacteria multiply and spread throughout the body, usually resulting in internal abscesses. Antibiotic therapy then is much less successful. Initial and periodic white blood cell count are necessary to properly monitor the progress of the patient and to detect any relapse.
Egg binding can be a life threatening condition. It results when a pregnant female cannot expel one or more eggs from the reproductive tract. Causes of egg binding include; malnutrition (especially mineral imbalances), various diseases, mummification of eggs, and large or malformed eggs. Physical examination and radiographs are necessary to diagnosis this problem. The veterinarian may select a medical and/or surgical approach to relieve this serious condition, depending upon the circumstances. Egg Binding

    About Monster
Monster is a Green Iguana and was born in 1998. He was sold in a local Dallas Texas pet store for only $12.95. He was picked out solely based on appearance. Monster was the brightest iguana of them all and had the most spunk. Unfortunately, both of those characteristics faded gradually the older he became. Throughout his lifespan, his own habitat has taken a toll on his health. The current light source, which was a valuable necessity, has burned and left minor scars. The heat sensation felt so good he couldn't resist moving!

    Introduction
A number of experienced iguana owners, educators and biologists have seen quite enough of Mr. Egan's approach to the idea of diets. His exaggerated claims and belittling rhetoric are choking any meaningful dialogue. In fact, he is sowing unproductive confusion amongst both new and experienced iguana owners, and really is starting to erode confidence in the Internet as a source of reliable and well-researched information on responsible iguana care. If Kevin Egan is, as he claims to be, interested in putting iguana welfare first, then he needs to start supplementing his views on diet with some facts. If you have not already done so, we suggest that you visit Kevin's "The Diet Comparison" page and read it before proceeding with this article. The various points that Kevin raises in his page
