    Welcome to the
Effingham County, Illinois Genealogy web site. My name is Linda (Kralman) Lambert. Even though I live in Arizona now (about 50 miles northwest of Phoenix) and have been here since 1972, I adopted the Effingham County GenWeb site in the spring of 1997. I was raised and educated in Teutopolis (3 miles east of Effingham). I graduated from Teutopolis High School in 1960. My family still lives in Effingham and Teutopolis, and my roots remain deeply embedded in Effingham County. This site is part of the Illinois GenWeb Project which is a part of the USGenWeb Project.
Effingham County NEEDS VOLUNTEERS to do lookups. If you own or have access to any Effingham County reference books (such as census, cemetery, marriage, obituaries, newspaper abstracts, etc.) and would be willing to do lookups for other Effingham County researchers, then please contact me Do You Know Why....... Do you know why.............I provide links to so many places instead of posting the information here? It's because I want the people who do the work to get the credit for it. If I posted it here, even though I put their name on it, it could be construed that I did the work when I actually did not. As someone whose work has been "stolen" and posted on other sites without credit, I am extremely sensitive to this issue. I would rather be criticized for providing links than let anyone think I am "stealing" their work.

Welcome to Champaign County Champaign County was created February 20, 1833 by an act of the Illinois legislature. Prior to that date, the area was part of Vermilion County. The 1833 act also provided that the county seat would be called "Urbana." Senator John W. Vance, for his efforts in getting the act passed, was given the honor of naming the new county. He named it "Champaign" after his former home county in Ohio, the county-seat of which is also Urbana. Celia Snyder

The Winnebago County area is referred to as the Stateline, because it borders the State of Wisconsin. I have tried to include in these pages, information for genealogical research both in the County and outside of the County. Information on locations outside of Winnebago County has been useful to me in my own research, and I would like to suggest that research in Wisconsin may be of value to you also. Examples. . . *Illinois residents with Scandinavian ancestry enlisted in Wisconsin to join regiments with others who shared the same background and *Lake Geneva, WI was a resort town and a great place to get married, so was Winona MN, by the way. The Rockford Public Library has an excellent collection for your genealogical research, the second largest in the state for a public library. The library now has over 50 rolls of Winnebago County vital records. They also have all the census schedules for Illinois and Wisconsin. An important Illinois location outside of Winnebago County that should be considered is the Regional History Center - IRAD at Northern Illinois University. Some of the oldest County Records are located there, and they will do research for you. Also, as a general rule, the Wisconsin State Historical Society is a better location for research of census records and is not as crowded as the National Archives in Chicago.

Births and deaths before January 1, 1916 and marriages before January 1, 1962 are recorded only in the office of the county clerk where the event occurred. Most county clerks have indexes to the records that are prior to 1916 that are available for the purpose of genealogical research.( List of county vital records Web sites or county clerk addresses ) These indexes generally provide the name, date and place of occurrence and are located in county courthouses located throughout the state. Although self-service access to the indexes is generally permitted, the law limits physical access to the individual records to the clerk's staff. When you locate a record from the index, it will be necessary for the clerk to pull the record for you once you have paid the appropriate search fee. Please check with the county clerk for fees and policies on reviewing indexes

This site was established as a part of the Illinois GenWeb Project which is a part of the USGenWeb Project H amilton County was created on February 8, 1821 from the western part of White County. The county seat is in McLeansboro, IL. The area of the present Hamilton County was part of White County from 1815 to 1821. From 1812 to 1815, it was part of Gallatin County . And before 1812, it was part of Randolph County . See the Illinois County Boundaries 1790-Present web site for maps showing county boundary changes. M y name is Michael L. Hébert and I took over this site from Ray Henderson who got the site off the ground in the early days of USGenWeb. I have been interested in Hamilton County genealogical research for many years. My mother, Rebecca J. Woodruff Rollefson, was born and raised in Hamilton County. I have lots of roots there going back to pre-statehood days ... however, mom herself doesn't go back quite that far! :-) If you need some information out of any of the Hamilton County reference books, please contact one of the lookup volunteers . Please contact me if you own or have access to any Hamilton County reference books and would like to volunteer for lookups.
