The word Illinois comes from the French word meaning "Illini or Land of Illini. It is an Algonquin word meaning "Men" or "Warriors." Illinois was discovered in 1673, settled in 1720 and entered the Union on 3 December, 1818. Illinois is surrounding by bodies of water on nearly every border: Mississippi River on the west; Ohio and Wabash Rivers in the south and Lake Michigan in the North. The States that border Illinois are: Kentucky, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri and Indiana. The first Railroad train crossed the Mississippi River on the river's first bridge in Rock Island, Illinois on 21 April, 1856. The highest point in Illinois is Charles Mound in JoDaviess County, elevation, 1, 235 and the lowest point is in Cairo, Alexander county at the Mississippi River, elevation 279.

23. Southern Illinois Genealogy Page
Egyptian Tales focuses on 20 stories of Southern Illinois history. The ILGenWeb Project is the state's largest family of free genealogy sites.
http://www.illinoishistory.com/genealogy.html
ILGenWeb The ILGenWeb Project is the state's largest family of free genealogy sites. Besides the main Illinois site, additional sites exist for each county. These web sites should be your first stop when searching for your ancestors once you know where they lived.
The project is part of the larger USGenWeb Project. Illinois Trails Illinois Trails is another volunteer group of sites similar to ILGenWeb although it hasn't been around nearly as long. Mail Lists Rootsweb sponsors Mail Lists for nearly every U.S. county and a vast majority of surnames. To subscribe, simply click on the link and it will open an e-mail letter to the list. Down in the body of the message simply type "SUBSCRIBE" (without the quotes) then click to send it. Don't worry about putting anything in the Subject line.
Also, turn off any signatures before you send it. The servers add you automatically so if there is anything other than "SUBSCRIBE" then you confuse the program. Once added you will receive a set of instructions back in e-mail. GenForum GenForum is one of the older free commercial websites for genealogy. The links on this page go to message forum boards for each county. The site is better known for its surname message boards.
