Are you a current resident in the state of Illinois? Are you considering becoming a teacher, but aren't sure how to proceed? First of all, congratulations are in order for your new career choice. Teaching can be a rich and rewarding vocation, if a little bit stressful. But before you jump headfirst into the classroom, you need to enroll in an Illinois teacher certification course. Many local Illinois community colleges and universities offer these types of programs. Most school districts in Illinois require all teachers to undergo a state sponsored training program. So in order to become a teacher in the great state of Illinois, you first have to enroll in an Illinois teacher certification course, and complete it.
You can then apply for a provisional teaching appointment in Illinois school districts. But the first step in becoming a teacher is to make a commitment to the profession. It may be a good idea for you to go to a local school and ask to sit in one of the classes. You may find that school is a very different place from an adult perspective. In this way, you can make sure that teaching is right for you. If so, then it's time to enroll in an Illinois teacher certification course.

THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS IN ILLINOIS
Illinois has two means by which individuals may be certificated. All persons seeking a first certificate in Illinois must complete an approved teacher education program, either in Illinois or in another state. Through the approved program process, institutions which have certification programs approved by the State Teacher Certification Board define the courses which the candidate must complete in order to be certified at the grade level and subject of the candidate's interest. The institution recommends the candidate for the certificate upon the candidate's completion of the program requirements. The other means of certification in Illinois is by a transcript evaluation of credits to verify completion of the minimum requirements for the certificate. However, this route to certification for Early Childhood, Elementary, High School and Special certificates is open only to persons who are in one of the following categories: 1) They hold an Illinois teaching certificate and have teaching experience in Illinois public or private schools.
