This chronology, therefore, includes events which mark that relationship." I. THE EARLY PERIOD On orders from President Millard Fillmore, Commodore Matthew Perry sails into Edo (Tokyo) Bay for the second time to persuade Japan to open their doors to trade after 200 years of isolation. Japans signs the Treaty of Kanagawa on March 31, opening a few ports to Americans. Other treaties with European nations follow. Treaty of Ansei signed. Opens up new ports in Japan and sets pattern of U.S.-Japan relations for the next fifty years. First group of Japanese immigrants arrive in U.S. and establish the Wakamarsu Colony at Gold Hill in California. Congress passes Chinese Exclusion Act, which bars further Chinese immigration and prohibits Chinese from citizenship. Enforced from 1882 to 1892, it creates labor demand, seen as major reason for increased immigration of Japanese to the Pacific Coast.

LEWIS AND CLARK: At noon, the party reaches St. Louis, shown on this trail map, concluding the journey. Clark writes: “we Suffered the party to fire off their pieces as a Salute to the Town. we were met by all the village and received a harty welcom from it’s inhabitants.” Sergeant Ordway writes in his diary: “much rejoiced that we have the Expedition Completed and now we look for boarding in Town and wait for our Settlement and then we entend to return to our native homes to See our parents once more as we have been So long from them.” WHAT ELSE HAPPENED? About a year ago in New Orleans, a sixteen year old black male given the slave name “Adam” was sold [ link temporarily unavailable ] by Pierre Espinasse to Louis Lapause for 360 piastres (a piastre is a dollar equivalent).
AND SO WHAT? So the journey is now over. This is my last post.

Immigration in American history 1980 - 2007
Immigration in American history
Immigration has played an important role in American history, and the United States continues to have the most open immigration policy in the world. Before the era of rapid communications and transportation, America encouraged relatively open immigration to settle its empty lands. After certain states passed immigration laws following the Civil War, the Supreme Court in 1875 declared the regulation of immigration a federal responsibility. The Immigration Service was established in 1891 to deal with the big increase in immigration which started in 1880.
The Great Wave 1900-1920.
The next 20 Years
There was very little immigration over the next 20 years, with net immigration actually dropping below zero for several years during the Depression. Immigration remained relatively low during the 20 years following World War II, because the 1920s national-origins system remained in place after Congress re-codified and combined all previous immigration and naturalization law into the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. American agriculture continued to import seasonal labor from Mexico, as they had during the war, under a 1951 formal agreement between the United States and Mexico that made the Bracero Program permanent.
The System of preference and the Unite Immigrant Families
In 1965, Congress replaced the national origins system with a preference system designed to unite immigrant families and attract skilled immigrants to the United States. This change to national policy responded to changes in the sources of immigration since 1924. The majority of applicants for immigration visas now came from Asia and Latin America rather than Europe. The preference system continued to limit the number of immigration visas available each year, however, and Congress still responded to refugees with special legislation. Not until the Refugee Act of 1980 did the United States have a general policy governing the admission of refugees.

In addition to arrivals from Europe, the thriving slave trade resulted in forced relocation of uncounted peoples from Africa. Of those who survived inhumane shipping in cargo holds, and including those born in America, African Americans numbered about 500,000 by the time of the Revolution, the majority of them living in slavery. Following the collapse of the Confederacy, immigration peaked again * After the potato crop failure, Irish immigration began its surge. * In 1848 gold was discovered, Latin and Chinese Americans immigrated to the Western Coast of the US. * 1840s and 1850s: 1.5 million immigrants

(Swans - October 4, 2010) When I suggest that American history is world history, I proclaim that America is defined by the comings and goings of the people of the world to and from the particular landmass currently settled in the northern part of the Western Hemisphere. People from other lands have either come here for a better life or sometimes even come here to work temporarily and return to their homelands. Let's look at some examples (some of which should be familiar to those who have a basic understanding of history and its patterns of immigration). When talking of the New World, the Eurocentric view holds that Christopher Columbus discovered it and that is the end of the story.

The American Expansion Into The West
the expansion of americans into the west was a major step in the 1800's. the united states had a great deal of land that no one had ventured to settle. however, that all changed as the prospect of making it big in the west entered people's minds.
although white settlers wanted desperately to settle the west rapidly, they encountered varous problems. the west was land like thye had never seen. the climate could change from one extreme to the other in a matter of hours, it was very dry, there was hardly any water, the begetation was different, and the settler's crops would not grow. in order to be successful in the west, americans had to find a way to get around these problems. in order to make up for the lack of water, settlers used windmills to generate their own. in order to make up for the lack of wood, which was needed to fence around land, barbed wire was invented. finally settlers had to alter what they grew in order for it to survive. instead of traditional wheat, they grew red wheat, which faired better in that environment.
