India - Geography
India lies in South Asia, between Pakistan, China and Nepal. On its northern borders is the world's highest mountain chain. The country's 28 states hold virtually every kind of landscape from snow-capped mountains to deserts and palm-fringed beaches. Recognizable on any world map, India is the thick, roughly triangular peninsula defined by the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, and the Indian Ocean to the south. You can see this range of contrasts on your India Travel experience. From its northernmost borders with China, this huge country extends a good 3,200 km (2,000 miles) to its southern tip, nearing the island nation of Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Himalayas, the world's highest mountain chain, dominate India's northern border. Following the mountain to the northeast, on your India Travels India's borders narrow to a small channel that passes between Nepal, Tiber Bangladesh and Bhutan, then spreads out again to meet Myanmar in an area called the "eastern triangle". On the western borders, apart from the Arabian Sea, is Pakistan. Because of India's size, its climate depends not only on the time of year, but also the location. In general, temperatures tend to be cooler in the north, especially between September and March. So remember to bring warm clothing on your India Travel itinerary in winter. The south is coolest between November and January. In June, winds and warm surface currents begin to move northward and westward, heading out of the Bay of Bengal and into the Arabian Gulf. This creates a phenomenon known as the north-west monsoon, or the "nor-westers", and it brings heavy rains to the Indian flood plains in the north. Between October and December, cold winds blow from the north. As they pass over the Bay of Bengal they gather moisture, which is shed on the south-east coast of India. In addition to the two monsoons, there are two other seasons, spring and autumn. These seasons are mild and pleasant and the best time to enjoy India Travel.

Ancient India Geography
India and its surrounding countries are so similar in culture and climatic conditions that the region is sometimes called the Indian sub-continent. In ancient times the geography of India was a little different than what it is today. In the northern part of India stand the Himalayan Mountains and the Hindu Kush stand in the North West. The southern region of India is surrounded by three bodies of water. They are the Arabian Sea to the south west; the Indian Ocean on the southern side and to the southeast lay the Bay of Bengal.
In ancient times, India was much more extended to the North West and west (consisting of parts of modern Pakistan and Afghanistan). The Himalayas lay to the north as they are today. In ancient period there were many other rivers besides the preset ones. The most important of them was River Saraswati, which is not traceable now. The geography of India is one of great extremes, encompassing desert, mountains, forest, and jungle. All of these environments are susceptible to unpredictable periods of flood, drought, and monsoon.

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman India is a beautiful and interesting country in southern Asia. Throughout history, many people have traveled thousands of miles to visit India. Many people have also written books about the people, plants, and animals of India. One of the most famous of these writers was a man named Rudyard Kipling. He wrote a story about a little Indian boy named Mowgli.
You may have already heard Mowgli's story. The book is called "The Jungle Book." Mowgli was raised by wolves and was taught the ways of life by different jungle animals. Mowgli found friends in a bear named Baloo and a black panther named Bagheera.
The animals in "The Jungle Book" are very common in India. Lions, tigers, leopards, panthers, monkeys and elephants can be found in India's many jungles. Elephants have been especially important to Indians.
