Indian History - Important events History of India An overview : The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500 B.C., when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C., probably due to ecological changes. During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan-speaking tribes migrated from the northwest into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River valley, they adapted to antecedent cultures. The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating boundaries. In the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., northern India was unified under the Gupta Dynasty. During this period, known as India's Golden Age, Hindu culture and political administration reached new heights. Islam spread across the Indian subcontinent over a period of 500 years. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Turks and Afghans invaded India and established sultanates in Delhi. In the early 16th century, descendants of Genghis Khan swept across the Khyber Pass and established the Mughal (Mogul) Dynasty, which lasted for 200 years. From the 11th to the 15th centuries, southern India was dominated by Hindu Chola and Vijayanagar Dynasties. During this time, the two systemsthe prevailing Hindu and Muslimmingled, leaving lasting cultural influences on each other.

India's history and culture is ancient and dynamic, spanning back to the beginning of human civilization. Beginning with a mysterious culture along the Indus River and in farming communities in the southern lands of India. The history of india is one puncuated by constant integration with migrating peoples and with the diverse cultures that surround India. Placed in the center of Asia, history in india is a crossroads of cultures from China to Europe, and the most significant Asian connection with the cultures of Africa. India's history is more than just a set of unique developments in a definable process; it is, in many ways, a microcosm of human history itself, a diversity of cultures all impinging on a great people and being reforged into new, syncretic forms. IndHistory.com brings you the india's history starting from ancient history of india to modern indian history. Shown below is the india timeline starting from 3000 BC of ancient indus valley civilization and harappa civilization to 1000 AD of Chola Dynasty of ancient history of india. Indian History in Short : The History of India begins with the birth of the Indus Valley Civilization in such sites as Mohenjo-Daro, Harappa, and Lothal, and the coming of the Aryans. These two phases are usually described as the pre-Vedic and Vedic perio ds. It is in the Vedic period that Hinduism first arose: this is the time to which the Vedas are dated.

    India History
Indian history can be roughly divided into the 6 periods of Ancient India, Medieval India, the years of the Company, colonial times as part of The Raj, the struggle for Independence and finally, post-Independence. India, the geopolitical entity as she stands today is a post-Independence phenomenon. It was as recently as "the stroke of the midnight hour" on 15th August 1947 when Nehru pronounced her "tryst with destiny" that India woke "to life and freedom". The following millennium saw the waxing and waning of empires. In the north the great dynasties were those of the Mauryas (300-200 BC) during which period Buddhism received royal patronage, and the Guptas during whose reign the subcontinent is said to have enjoyed a "golden period" (300-500 AD). The intervening period had new settlers like the Shakas and Kushanas forming lesser kingdoms in the area around the Ganges. The influence of these Aryan kingdoms rarely reached the south. Regional dynasties like the Andhras, Cheras, Pandyas and Cholas ruled kingdoms in the south of the Deccan Plateau and lower down the peninsula. When unable to withstand the pressures of central Asian invaders the Gupta Empire crumbled, the north got divided into strong regional kingdoms (except for a brief period from 606 to 647 under the poet king Harshavardhan). This was the time that the Rajputs grew to prominence in the west.

    India History
The culture and history of India is considered to be dynamic, unique and intriguing, shrouded in mysticism and romanticism. According to historians, it dates back to the commencement of human existence. Thus, it is amongst the first civilizations to have come into existence. One of the most unique aspects of India history is that it is dotted with constant integrating of new cultures. In fact, it is regarded as one of the most invaded and plundered nations. And in spite of this, the people always welcomed new cultures, making it the most diverse nation. Later in the fifth century, emperor Ashoka united large parts of India. He also brought Buddhism to India, having spread it widely during his reign. Islam entered India in the eighth century and by the eleventh century it became a part of the Indian cultural heritage. Then came the European invasions that brought their cultures to be integrated into the Indian civilization. Thus, Christianity became a part of Indian society. Through the ages India and her natives have witnessed and suffered at the hands of invaders and plunderers. The nation has been looted. But, still it never lost the very essence of their existence, which is being hospitable to their guests. While armies fought the enemies, the nation continued to intertwine the threads of a new culture into their existing quilt of diversity.

    India - History
The history of India is as colorful and glorious as the country itself. The country has witnessed some of the most deep impacting events in the past and each event has left a mark of its own on the culture, lifestyle, religion, economy, philosophy and every conceivable aspect of the country. The first conceivable civilization was set up nearly five thousand years back along the Indus River valley. The twin cities of Mohenjodaro and Harappa, which are now in Pakistan were governed by priests and held the fundamentals of Hinduism. They had maintained a sophisticated lifestyle, a highly developed aesthetic sense, town planning skills and the knowledge of a mysterious script language. The Indus civilization was once upon a time extended nearly a million square kilometers across the Indus river valley. It was there at the same time as the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Sumer but far survived them. Surviving for nearly a thousand years the Indus valley civilization was demolished in the tectonic disturbances in about 1700 BC, which caused a series of floods.

India India Home Adventure in India Asia Homepage The World History I True to the haphazard ambiance of the country, the discovery of India's most ancient civilization literally happened by accident. British engineers in the mid-1800's, busy constructing a railway line between Karachi and Punjab, found ancient, kiln-baked bricks along the path of the track. This discovery was treated at the time as little more than a curiosity, but archaeologists later revisited the site in the 1920's and determined that the bricks were over 5000 years old. Soon afterward, two important cities were discovered: Harappa on the Ravi river, and Mohenjodaro on the Indus. The civilization that laid the bricks, one of the world's oldest, was known as the Indus. They had a written language and were highly sophisticated. Dating back to 3000 BC, they originated in the south and moved north, building complex, mathematically-planned cities. Some of these towns were almost three miles in diameter and contained as many as 30,000 residents. These ancient municipalities had granaries, citadels, and even household toilets. In Mohenjodaro, a mile-long canal connected the city to the sea, and trading ships sailed as far as Mesopotamia. At its height, the Indus civilization extended over half a million square miles across the Indus river valley, and though it existed at the same time as the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Sumer, it far outlasted them.

INDIA/History Earliest Times. Indian history dates back at least 4,500 years. About 2500 B.C., a civilization began to flourish in the Indus Valley in what is now Pakistan and western India. Ruins of the ancient cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro (also spelled Moen jo Daro) tell much about this civilization. The ruins show that the people had many conveniences. For example, drainage systems ran from the houses into brick-lined sewers. The people lived in brick homes several stories high. The cities of this civilization had large public baths and well-planned streets that formed city blocks. The people of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro had systems of counting, measuring, weighing, and writing. They dug ditches and canals around the cities to irrigate their farms. No one knows what happened to these early people. Invasion of the Aryans. Around 1500 B.C., migrating bands of fair-skinned people arrived in India. They came from central Asia through the mountain passes of the Hindu Kush. These warlike people called themselves Aryans, a Sanskrit word meaning nobles or owners of land. They were shepherds, and counted their wealth in herds of cattle and sheep. The Aryans became the ancestors of many present-day northern Indians. The Aryans who came to India found the dark-skinned Dravidians living there in flourishing cities. The Dravidians traded in cotton goods, gold, pearls, and pepper. Many moved ahead of the invading Aryans into southern India. They became the ancestors of the people who live in southern India today.
