St. Thomas Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Singapore is a parish of the Chennai Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India. We inherit the untainted apostolic faith from Apostle St. Thomas which has been upheld and preserved with reverence for generations.
The first seed of Orthodox Syrian Church was laid in Singapore when our forefathers under the British colonial rule conducted Holy Eucharist in March 1928. Our numbers increased over the years and in 1958 we built our own church at Topaz Road. The church moved to its present location in Yio Chu Kang Road in 1983 and was elevated to cathedral status in 1997.

India History - The Muslim Kings
India history records that the Muslim kings from Turkey ruled from the 12th century until 1397 when the great wave of Mongols swept down and ravaged the entire region. They moved with lightning speed and slaughtered all before them. India history has recorded that the brutal devastation led to a period of complete chaos. In 1527 when the Mughal monarch Babur came to power; he conquered the Punjab and took Delhi. Babur was a complicated, enlightened ruler from Kabul who loved poetry, gardening, and books. He wrote cultural treatises on the Hindus he conquered, and took notes on local flora and fauna. This was the foundation of the Mughal dynasty, whose six emperors would comprise the most influential of all the Muslim dynasties in India. Babur died in 1530, leaving behind a weak ineffective son Humayuns.
India History - Akbar The Great
His grandson, Akbar, however, would be the greatest Mughal ruler of all. Unlike his grandfather, Akbar was more warrior than scholar, and he extended the empire as far south as the Krishna River.

This was the beginning of Vedic ages as the Aryans came in from the North and spread through large parts of India bringing along with them their own culture and religious beliefs. This is very period when four Vedas or the important books of Hinduism were compiled. In history of India , the year 567 B.C. saw the founder of the Buddhist Religion Gautama Buddha being born. Also, during this very same period lived Mahavira, who founded the Jain Religion. Till this date the Indian subcontinent is packed with number of caves and monuments devoted to these religions and all are worth a visit. 200 years later arrived the golden period in the history of India India saw Christianity entering at about the same time from Europe. As the legends go St. Thomas the Apostle arrived in India in 52 A.D. Even earlier than that people of the Jewish religion arrived on India's shores. In approximately the 7th century A.D. a group of Zoroastrians, or Parsees, landed in Gujarat and became a part of the large mix of religions in India today, each of which adds its important and distinct flavor.

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman India is home to one of the oldest civilizations on the planet. Only in the last 50 years has India enjoyed true freedom of its people. Invasions of India began with the first Aryan invasion several thousands of years ago. Since then, India and its people have fallen under the rule of invading forces with great regularity.
The earliest Indian history is preserved in the ruins of a city called Mohenjo Daro, which lies in present-day Pakistan. Thousands of years ago, citizens of Mohenjo Daro had developed systems of counting, writing, weighing and measuring. They practiced advanced ways of life that were unknown in Europe even as late as the 19th century. The city featured ditches and canals that irrigated local farms. The fate of the people at Mohenjo Daro is unknown.
Aryans began invading India about 4,000 years ago. They were the tribes of people from north of India in central Asia. The word "Aryan" is a Sanskrit word meaning "owners of land." They moved into India as other Aryans were moving into Europe. The Aryans in both India and Europe became ancestors of some of today's fair-skinned people in India and Europe.

History of India
The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500 B.C., when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C., probably due to ecological changes.
During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan-speaking tribes migrated from the northwest into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River valley, they adapted to antecedent cultures.
The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating boundaries. In the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., northern India was unified under the Gupta Dynasty. During this period, known as India's Golden Age, Hindu culture and political administration reached new heights.
Islam spread across the Indian subcontinent over a period of 500 years. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Turks and Afghans invaded India and established sultanates in Delhi. In the early 16th century, descendants of Genghis Khan swept across the Khyber Pass and established the Mughal (Mogul) Dynasty, which lasted for 200 years. From the 11th to the 15th centuries, southern India was dominated by Hindu Chola and Vijayanagar Dynasties. During this time, the two systemsthe prevailing Hindu and Muslimmingled, leaving lasting cultural influences on each other.

Modern India History
Posted by Admin under India History [30] Comments Vasco da Gama when landed at Calicut, sailing via the Cape of Good Hope in 1498, marked the beginning of the European era in Indian history. The Portuguese by the 16th Century had already established their colony in Goa.
In the next century, India was visited by a large number of European travellers - Italians, Englishmen, Frenchmen and Dutchmen. They were drawn to India for different reasons. Some were traders, others adventurers, and quite a few fired by the missionary zeal to find converts to Christianity. Eventually England, France, the Netherlands and Denmark, floated East India Companies.
During the late 16th and the 17th Centuries, these companies competed with each other fiercely. By the last quarter of the 18th Century the English had vanquished all others and established themselves as the dominant power in India. The British administered India for a period of about two centuries and brought about revolutionary changes in the social, political and the economic life of the country.
Once the British had consolidated their power, commercial exploitation of the natural resources and native labour became ruthless. By the middle of the 19th Century arrogant exploitation of the people had tried the patience of the Indians to the limit.
