American Indian Art
The American Indians have long been proud of their art. American Indian art includes ceramics (including pottery), metalwork, beadwork, quillwork (embroidery using porcupine quills), leather items, paintings, basket weaving, and carvings - just about any type of art of which you can imagine. This American Indian art depicts their lifestyles, cultures, religion, and environment. Artifacts of American Indian art history have been preserved in such places as the Museum of the American Indian (Santa Fe, New Mexico), Museum of the American Indian (New York City), and the Museum of Mankind (London, England). As far back as 12,000 years ago, the first Indians began to inhabit North America. Remains of their art, in the forms of stone carvings and pottery, have been found all over the country. These were, of course, crude forerunners of the much finer artifacts of American Indian art found within the last 2,000 years. Most had earth tones of brown, red, and black and pottery was usually painted with images of nature, animals, or spiritual symbols.

INUIT ART
WOODLANDS ART CONTACT HOME Welcome to our gallery of First Nations Art, located in Lake Louise Alberta, the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Our collection of Inuit Art, expressed in sculpture, drawings and other medium, reflects the very essence of the Inuit people and their culture. The same stands true for our collection of Woodlands and Northwest Coast Indian art.
INUIT ART
WOODLANDS ART Our involvement with Inuit art had humble beginnings in the Canadian Arctic during the seventies. The majority of the Inuit artists represented by Northern Art Impressions have been friends and neighbors with whom we have lived or worked together for over quarter of a century. Selected works of Inuit sculpture by such luminaries as Lucy Tasseor, Barnabus Arnasunaaq, Toona Iquliq, Mary Akjar, Miriam Qiyuk, Kiawak Ashoona along with original Woodlands paintings by Norval Morrisseau and Clemence Wescoupe are always available in our collection.

MAIN INDIA PAGE INDIAN FOOD INDIAN CLOTHING INDIAN GAMES ... INDIAN ART The major themes of Indian art seem to begin emerging as early as the Harappan period, about 2500 BC . Although we're still not sure, some Harappan images look like later images of Vishnu and Shiva , and the tradition may start this early. With the arrival of the Indo-Europeans (or Aryans) around 1500 BC, came new artistic ideas. Around 500 BC, the conversion to Buddhism of a large part of the population of India brought with it some new artistic themes. But at first nobody made images of the Buddha - only stupas (STOO-pahs), symbolic representations that didn't look like a person. Then the conquests of Alexander the Great , in the 320's BC, also had an important impact on Indian art. Alexander left colonies of Greek veteran soldiers in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and these soldiers attracted Greek sculptors (maybe some of the soldiers were sculptors). Their Greek-style carvings attracted attention in India - the first life-size stone statues in India date to the 200's BC, just after Alexander.
