  • graduation girl image by robert mobley from Fotolia.com Alternative schools help students who don't succeed in the public school environment toward graduation. Indiana does not have an age limit on students working for a high school diploma, so adults may attend some schools on the Indiana Department of Education's list of alternative education programs. To graduate, students must pass the Indiana General Qualification Exam and complete the "Core 40" requirements. In 2010, a high school diploma added an average of $176 weekly to a non-graduate's median salary of $448, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Ombudsman Educational Services: an Alternative Education Program for Adolescent At-Risk Students Programs in Indiana Programs for At Risk and Struggling Teens in Michigan Ombudsman gives middle and secondary school students who are at risk of dropping out an accredited alternate route to earn a high school diploma. Ombudsman offers students personalized attention in small learning communities and a flexible schedule that accommodates family and work responsibilities. Students are on task the entire time they are in the learning center, allowing them to make the most of a compressed class day. The result is that 85 percent of Ombudsman students – all of whom are at risk of dropping out – graduate, earn credits or return to their district school closer to or at grade level. Seventy-seven percent of eligible Ombudsman students graduated during the 2007-2008 academic year – better than many school systems in the country. Ombudsman believes that students learn best when they have control over their learning and are held accountable for it. Therefore, Ombudsman instructors are selected for their ability to work with young people who are at risk. They guide students to make good choices about their academic progress, their attendance, consideration for others and their ability to follow the rules in the learning centers.

The remaining districts of Beech Grove, Decatur, Franklin, Lawrence, Perry, Pike, Speedway, Warren, Washington and Wayne serve the rest of the county. For a map of school district boundaries click here Most students in all 11 corporations are geographically assigned to a particular school. Within most districts, parents have some choice about where to send their children to school. These options are described in more detail below. Several of the corporations offer vocational training at the high school level, as well as alternative schooling options for students who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting. In addition, some schools (especially at the high school level) have more than one program of study from which students can choose. There are also several charter schools in operation in Marion County, with more scheduled to open in the coming years. Under recently passed federal legislation known as No Child Left Behind, if your child's geographically assigned school does not make adequate yearly progress for a certain number of years, he or she may be eligible to attend another higher performing school in your district.
