General Consul met the Governor in Naryan-Mar
Source: Administration of Nenets AO and Naryana Wynder
Norwegian General Consul, Jon Elvedal Fredriksen, visited Naryan-Mar last week. During the two-day trip he met Governor Igor Fyodorov of Nenets AO and the Yasavey delegation, among others. Cooperation between Naryan-Mar and Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino) was discussed, as well as the future possible establishment of a Nenets radio station. The Governor and the General Consul discussed the ongoing cooperation between Norwegian and Russian partners in general, but particular attention was brought to the cooperation between Naryan-Mar and Guovdageaidnu, which is expected to be intensified during the current year. Also, the cooperation agreement between the oil-producing regions of Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Russia) and Stavanger fylke (Norway), signed in Naryan-Mar in September 2009) was mentioned as a solid relation between the two countries. At the subsequent meeting between the General Consul and Yasavey (The Public Association of Nenets People), the idea of

These peoples are the guardians of the forest and no-one is more interested than them in ensuring the conservation of the forests that have been their home, an integral part of their culture and the source of their livelihood. In the book, the major issue of indigenous peoples still living in voluntary isolation is highlighted as a way of contributing to the protection of their rights.

Copper Canyon
The Tarahumara or Raramuri , as they call themselves, inhabit the Copper Canyon, as it is known in the U.S., or the Sierra Tarahumara in northwest Mexico. The actual name Tarahumara was what the first Spanish called these Native American people. The Spanish originally encountered the Tarahumara throughout Chihuahua upon arrival in the 1500's, but as the Spanish encroached on their civilization the shy and private Tarahumara retreated for the nearly inaccessible canyons of the Sierra Tarahumara. Only the Jesuit missionaries followed at first and with only scattered success. Tarahumara Today the Tarahumara live in caves, under cliffs and in small wood and stone cabins in remote areas. They live a simple life undisturbed by modern technologies. They are known as a quiet and considerate people who are expert farmers and runners. has been translated to mean "runners" in their native language. Due to severe drought in northern Mexico, the Tarahumara have suffered famine in the past few years.

Manulua Ink Tatatau - Tongan Tattoo About This Site Created by Ni Powell This site was created to address the lack of awareness of the Tongan Tatatau tradition. After researching for years, I've decided to compile the little information found on Tongan Tatatau. Early reference on Tongan Tattooing is scarce and the knowledge of it is quickly passing with each generation. I wanted to preserve this once important part of the Tongan culture and provide an accessible site for those interested in learning more.
Because of the lack of sufficient information, some views may conflict with those presented here. I have come across many of these contradictions myself when speaking with Tongans and non-Tongans. I've tried my best to separate the information and put forth a more complete understanding of the Tongan Tatatau. I welcome any criticisms, comments, and/or additional information that can be provided in order to strengthen the awareness.
I am hoping that this site will be a wealth of information for Tongans and non-Tongans who are interested in learning more about the Tatatau. In doing this, I am also hoping that individuals may become inspired to do further research into this ancient tradition, thereby keeping it alive.

Native America, Discovered and Conquered by Robert J. Miller
Article on privatizing Canadian reserves
November 14th, 2010 published September 1, 2010 in the Toronto Globe and Mail. It first addressed the economic success that some reserves have created and how the national Indian department is studying those successes. But then the article turned to the fear some native leaders have that their rights to land and resources are at risk. Apparently, the involvement of (Manny) Jules – a vocal advocate of privatizing reserve lands and who heads the First Nations Tax Commission – is provoking strong suspicions among some native leaders about the government’s interest in Native success. Apparently, the Indian Affairs Minister, John Duncan, has also long advocated for private land rules to apply on reserves. The opposition is delivering strong warnings because they see an attempt to revive elements of the controversial 1969 White Paper, a failed effort by then-Indian affairs minister Jean Chrétien to end Ottawa’s responsibility for reserves. Assembly of First Nations national Chief Shawn Atleo supports deals with the private sector, but said the department should be working with him and all chiefs on land issues.

Exploration and Discovery In the 19th century, Hawaiian scholars Kamakau and Kepelino attributed the discovery of Hawai'i to a fisherman named Hawai'iloa. He is said to have discovered the islands during a long fishing trip from a homeland in the west called Ka 'Aina kai melemele a Kane ("Land of the yellow sea of Kane"); the Big Island was named after him while Kaua'i, O'ahu, and Maui were named after his children. Hawai'iloa's navigator, Makali'i, steered in the direction of Iao, the Eastern Star, and hoku'ula, the red star (perhaps the rising Aldebaran in the constellation of Taurus). After replenishing his supplies, Hawai'iloa returned home and brought his wife and his children back to Hawai'i, again using the fixed stars as guides. The Hawaiian people are all descended from him. Some scholars have questioned the authenticity of the tradition of Hawai'iloa because of similarities between Biblical stories and stories in the tradition of Kumuhonua, of which the story of Hawai'iloa is a part. These scholars believe that parts of the tradition of Kumuhonua were invented in the 19th century to conform to Biblical traditions. However, Randie Kamuela Fong of Kamehameha Schools writes, "after careful review of Fornander's version of the Kumuhonua tradition, the Hawai'iloa portion bears no resemblance to any biblical account. The names, places, and basic settings and plots give us no reason to question their age and authenticity. Further, Patience Bacon of the Bishop Museum remembers kupuna (elders) being interviewed in the 1920's and 30's by Tutu Puku'i. These kupuna spoke of Hawai'iloa as their 'reality.'"
