When Pacific Islanders and Americans Meet...
A new book by Willard C. Muller
Please visit our new web site at i slands.globalspan.net
This prize-winning non-fiction book is about fascinating people of some remote, incredibly beautiful Pacific islands near the equator, and the small band of mostly young Americans sent out by their government to administer them.
The author, first civilian administrator and American Consul of part of the Carolines, takes the reader by freighter and outrigger canoe around the islands. Follow him and other Americans and Trukese along palm and breadfruit tree-shaded paths into the heart of village life. Linger long enough to get to know something about their island ways.

Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands
Scattered across a vast expanse of water as wide as the continental United States are over twenty-one hundred islands that make up the cultural region known as Micronesia. The area includes three major archipelagoes: the Marshalls, Carolines, and Marianas. (Culturally, Micronesia includes Kiribati and Nauru, but the separate political history of these countries excludes them from the archives discussed here.) Having passed through colonial rule by the Spanish, Germans, and Japanese, the islands of Micronesia became a United States administered United Nations strategic trusteeship following World War II. This new arrangement was named the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI). Initially under Navy control, the islands were transferred to the U.S. Dept. of the Interior in 1951. Administrative headquarters, originally in Honolulu, moved to Guam, and finally to Saipan. For administrative purpose, the TTPI divided the islands of Micronesia into six districts based on earlier colonial precedent: the Marshalls, Ponape, Truk, Marianas, Yap, and Palau, with the later addition of Kosrae.

Bishop of Malaita, Church of the Province of Melanesia, 2006 THE MELANESIAN MISSION 33 SOUTHAMPTON STREET, STRAND, W.C. 2 and at 41 SHORTLAND STREET, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND RELIGION AND CUSTOMS OF THE MELANESIAN I. The Melanesian a Religious Man e.g ., a good day's fishing, is due to friendly spirits, to whom thanks and sacrifice are due. So the Melanesian goes nowhere, does nothing, plans nothing, without prayer and sacrifice. All his customs, then, are religious and bound up with his religion, for they are one. His religion is the worship of disincarnate spirits; and those spirits are ever round about him. II. His Religious Vocabulary Let us look at a few of the main words of his religious vocabulary, using the "Mota" language, and try to get a glimpse through them of his religious life. "Mana."
