    Guatemala Radio Project
Guatemala community radio stations prove essential to relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Stan The importance of community radio stations throughout Guatemala became especially apparent in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Stan. On October 1, Hurricane Stan ravaged Guatemala, leaving 654 people dead, 828 people missing, and at least 120,000 homeless. The hurricane caused the most severe damage in the states of Sololá and San Marcos. Community radio stations played an essential role not only in documenting the destruction caused by the hurricane, but also in helping their listeners obtain relief. The stations provided a vital link for many citizens, particularly those in remote and isolated areas who were otherwise cut off from mainstream modes of communication. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, community radio stations broadcasted critical information to indigenous people about where and how to obtain safe supplies of food, fresh water, and clothing.

The following is a story about the theme that the trekkers are exploring in Turkey: How does your society define those two terms? How does the economy affect individuals in the countryside? How does the economy affect individuals in the city? How do politics, government, and culture all influence people who are rich and people who are poor? Click image for larger view In the vast, bustling city of Ankara, the capital of Turkey, a city mouse lived in splendor. With a soft bed to sleep on, quick and efficient Internet access, delicious vegetables at the local market, and visits to the local hamam (Turkish bathhouse), the city mouse was pleased and content. Indeed, this mouse considered himself a wealthy mouse, full of fortune, and he felt thankful every day for his situation. In a small, homey village an hour away from Ankara, a country mouse lived in splendor. With soft mats to sleep on, all her friends and family nearby, delicious cheese that one of her neighbors made every week, and a potbellied stove right in the house to heat up water, the country mouse was pleased and content. Indeed, this mouse considered herself a wealthy mouse , full of fortune, and she felt thankful every day for her situation.

Background
The Mexico-Guatemalan border has been a troubled zone since the Americas gained their independence from Spain in 1821. Since the closing of the colonial era towards the end of the 19th century, repeated incidents have plagued the region encompassing southern Mexico and western Guatemala. The current border came into being after the two nations signed the Treaty of Limits. Nowadays, the bulk of the concern over the border involves Guatemalan migrants crossing the border trying to eventually gain illegal entrance into the U.S. Disputes between the two countries revolve around both the undocumented migrants trekking through Mexico as well as those with final Mexican destinations. Migrants
Even after the Central American wars were brought to an end, large numbers of migrants still were trying to cross the Guatemala-Mexico border. The two neighboring countries only recently have begun to increase border security in a meaningful manner, and are still encountering several problems in achieving this. In order to better the situation, the countries must appreciate the viewpoint of its migrant population. The most prevalent categories of migrants trying to pierce the border between Mexico and the U.S. is mainly Guatemalan migrant farmers looking for seasonal work on large commercial farms, as well as Mexicans, Central and South Americans trying to make their way to the United States through Mexico.

UNITED STATES: Greens Seek Commitment from Schwarzenegger SAN FRANCISCO - Ecologist groups say the environmental proposals of the governor-elect of the U.S. state of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, are vague and they are going to demand concrete answers.
Carl Zichella, regional director of the environmental group Sierra Club, noted that they have entered "uncharted territory" and that the only thing the actor-turned-politician has offered are promises.
Schwarzenegger, famous for his role as the "Terminator", was elected governor of the powerful state of California on Oct. 7 following a controversial campaign that the media came to describe as a circus.
He has said he will work towards implementing the state law for reducing greenhouse gas emissions counter to federal policies cut air pollution by at least 50 percent and ban further oil drilling in California. CUBA: Protecting Wetlands and Aquatic Birds HAVANA - An internationally backed project for the western Cuban province of Pinar del Río aims to protect the area's wetlands and waterfowl.

Our Business and Corporate Responsibility Challenges Guatemala Guatemala is a relatively under-explored region, with a high level of prospectivity. The southern margin of the south of Peten Basin has a similar geology to the highly productive oil and gas fields of southern Mexico. Seismic and sub-surface data suggest that the geological trend of southern Mexico extends to the southern Peten Basin. The lithological profile of southern Peten Basin displays rock formations favourable to the production of oil. There is a strong demand for oil and gas energy as a result of the growing economy of Guatemala. The government is keen to promote inward investment by companies such as PetroLatina Energy.
