The talk page may contain suggestions. (January 2009) Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) refers to organic chemical compounds which have significant vapor pressures and which can affect the environment and human health. VOCs are numerous, varied, and ubiquitous. Although VOCs include both man-made and naturally occurring chemical compounds, it is the anthropogenic VOCs that are regulated, especially for indoors where concentrations can be highest. VOCs are typically not acutely toxic but have chronic effects. Because the concentrations are usually low and the symptoms slow to develop, analysis of VOCs and their effects is a demanding area.

Main article: Solvent No widely supported definition of a VOC exists. The definitions of VOCs used for control of precursors of photochemical smog used by EPA and states with their own outdoor air pollution regulations includes exemptions for compounds that are technically only those volatile organic compounds but that are determined to be non-reactive or of low-reactivity in the smog formation process. EPA formerly defined these compounds as Reactive Organic Gases (ROG) but changed the terminology to VOC for simplicity's sake. However, this specific use of the term VOCs can be misleading, specifically when applied to indoor air quality because many chemicals that are not regulated for purposes of controlling outdoor air pollution but that are important from an indoor air quality perspective are still found in products that are labeled as to VOC content according to the requirements of ambient air pollution regulation.

HVAC System Cleaning
For over 20 years, Carolina Filters, Inc. The health, safety and product quality risks of dirty air systems are widely known. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is now being more closely monitored than in the past due to the link between dirty air systems and the health and safety of employees. The presence of mold, bacteria and dust mites, as well as common nuisance dust within the HVAC system can aggravate allergies, asthma and other employee respiratory problems. Fire safety officials recommend periodic inspection and cleaning of air systems and duct work to remove oils, fly ash, monomer dust, lint or other flammable material. With a minor ignition source these contaminants can create a disastrous duct fire. At Carolina Filters, we take pride in being able to assist building owners and managers identify indoor HVAC System cleaning problems and help them arrive at an acceptable solution without interruption of production or inconvenience to operations or personnel. Our goal is to achieve and maintain a healthy and safe Indoor Air Quality environment for you and your employees.

Posted 12/19/2002 5:44 PM Updated 12/19/2002 10:05 PM OAS_AD("VerticalBanner"); Home indoor allergens can make you wither in winter By Amanda Gardner, HealthScout News "One of the major problems in industrialized societies now relates to the increasing incidence of allergic and asthmatic disease," says Dr. Gailen D. Marshall, an allergy expert at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. "It has to do with indoor air quality environment." It doesn't matter if you live in a dry or humid climate. People from Seattle to Phoenix are breathing more and more re-circulated air in the name of energy efficiency. This air picks up allergens in the indoor environment and redistributes them. The problem only gets worse in the winter, when we stay inside so much. The two main culprits when it comes to indoor allergens are molds and dust mites.
