Media Specialist, Rock Rest Elementary School Unionville students learn lesson in giving The idea began when Unionville Elementary principal Sharyn VonCannon decided her students needed to experience the joy of giving. The result: 3,184 books gifted to Rock Rest Elementary School.
“I wanted to incorporate the experience with the character trait of giving and service to others,” VonCannon said.
VonCannon overheard Rock Rest principal Wendy Gravely say that her school’s classroom libraries needed some work, so she suggested to her school’s site base team and her Parent Teacher Organization that her students collect new and gently-used books from home and donate them to Rock Rest Elementary School. The project was dubbed Students Helping Students.

PRESCHOOL PHILOSOPHIES AND CURRICULUM Our preschool respects and values children, their families, and their cultures. We recognize that all children have their own strengths and potentials for thinking and learning. We encourage children to communicate and represent their understandings, feelings and creative selves through written and spoken words, drawings, paintings, sculptures, block constructions, drama, movement, dance, music, computers and more. Teachers use their own knowledge and skills to support and help develop children's abilities and willingness to use communication in many ways. We welcome collaboration of families with the teachers and children in developing and implementing our educational program, and we encourage their contribution of skills, materials, ideas, and home experiences to enrich the educational process for their children. Teachers set guidelines for the curriculum. Within these broad guidelines, activities and projects develop through the teachers' attention to the children's interests and cues. Ongoing planning and collaboration by teachers and children together helps determine the direction taken as they work with specific educational values and objectives in mind. The children have the opportunity and freedom each day to engage in a variety of developmentally appropriate activities for the 'whole child,' along with long-term group projects that reflect the interests of the children. These activities integrate the areas of science, math, pre-reading/reading, language, social studies, and fine arts into the curriculum and continually provide for the development of social skills. The Open Court Phonics Program is one channel through which children are introduced to letters and sounds. Games, manipulatives, literature, art and music reinforce ideas introduced and incorporate all of the senses and every learning style into our approach. Exploration of a 'theme' each month in a variety of ways leads to many discoveries!

How Do You Teach Math?
  • Workbooks are relatively inexpensive. They are logically incremental and modular, usually with one or two pages devoted to a narrow topic. They place minimal demand on teachers by posing no open-ended questions or investigations; rather, each problem has one and only one right answer, which can be readily checked by the student in the back of the book.
Schmitt goes on to say, Some instructors say that using workbooks is the most practical and reasonable way to teach math because workbooks allow adults to work at their own pace. The problems with relying primarily on workbooks, however, outweigh the benefits. The major criticism is this: Aside What is needed is an approach to teaching math that:
  • Is less concerned with school mathematics and more concerned with the mathematical demands of the lived-in world. Adults are faced with complex problems in their roles as workers, parents and community members, and numeracy is an important part of accomplishing many larger tasks. Supports understanding over rule-based learning in order to equip adults better for the decision-making and problem-solving that involves math.
