IPM Strategies
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the judicious use and integration of various pest control tactics in the context of the associated environment of the pest in ways that compliment and facilitate the biological and other natural controls of pests to meet economic, public health and environmental goals. Wherever applicable, IPM uses scouting, pest trapping, pest resistant plant varieties, sanitation, various cultural control methods, physical and mechanical controls, biological controls, and precise timing and application of any needed pesticides.
With IPM, the decision to use pesticides is made when an action threshold for a pest is reached and no other alternative management methods are available that will provide effective control. When pesticides are needed, the safest and most effective materials should be selected for use. The goals of IPM are to achieve the effective management of pests in the safest manner.
INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Questions to Ask Before Good Pest Management Decisions Are Made
Good pest management decisions can be made only after answering questions such as:
  • What pests are present, and in what numbers and stages of development?

Integrated Pest Management: Crops at Risk
The goal of the CAR program is to enhance the development and implementation of innovative, ecologically based sustainable IPM system(s). Preferably, this should involve a diversity of tactics and approaches for a single or specific food or fiber commodity in commercial production for pre- and/or post-harvest system(s). The program addresses either a major acreage or high value crop commodity such as key fruits and vegetables. The primary emphasis is on crop productivity and profitability, while addressing critical environmental quality and human health issues. The CAR program will fund integrated multifunctional/multidisciplinary research, education, and extension projects for crops with high priority IPM needs as identified by stakeholders.

These could be: soils/ crops, value addition, IPM, Biotech, etc. Students will have a chance to work on individual papers in any one of these subjects. (Fig 1). Students will be expected to select topics of their interest during the first two classes and then work with an assigned faculty member to develop their project paper. Barn Owl Nest Boxes for Attracting Barn Owls for Rodent Control and Barn Owl Conservation. Vineyard, orchard, crop, and property owners, enhance your rodent control programs while helping preserve this beautiful raptor. Designed by a leading barn owl researcher, The Barn Owl Box The Barn Owl Box will not rot, will not need rebuilt or replaced, and will last indefinitely. Its light weight makes it easy to install, whether on a post, in a barn, or a tree. Both models of nest box come with all the mounting hardware and a brochure on installation. Barn owls have been contributing to rodent control long before the term integrated pest management was born. Since humans planted crops and built shelters, barn owls have lived in close proximity to us. In recent years, using barn owls for pest management has become much more sophisticated. Farms have been able to establish densities of up to one pair for every 20 acres or less, creating an efficient rodent killing system that is self perpetuating. Now in use by the Army Corps of Engineers and the Departments of Natural Resources of Illinois, Wisconsin, and South Carolina
