Department of the Interior
Home Library US Government Guide When the United States acquired its western territories, it operated on the principle that the land and reSources belonged to all the people, not just those who settled there. As a result, vast tracts of land, mostly in the western states, still belong to the federal government. The Interior Department has jurisdiction over millions of acres of federal lands that serve as national parks, wildlife refuges, federal mining areas, timberlands, and wetlands. As the nation's principal conservation agency, the Interior Department aims to protect and provide public access to the nation's natural and cultural heritage. Immediately after the United States acquired a large amount of territory in the southwest as a result of the Mexican War , and after the settlement of the Oregon territory dispute with Great Britain in the northwest, Congress created the Interior Department in 1849. The department's primary mission included supervising Indian programs, the exploration of western lands, and research into the nation's natural and geological reSources. Within the department, the Bureau of Land Management is responsible for more than 264 million acres of public lands and more than 560 acres of

With All Deliberate Speed: Hearing Held on Deputy Interior Secretary Nominee
Posted by Kathryn and Steve Mar Despite high expectations, things have slowed down a little at the Interior Department. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has been the only confirmed nominee, and not much is happening on Indian affairs. However, former Clinton Administration Deputy Interior Secretary David J. Hayes is set to assume the same position under President Obama.
With a promised focus on tribal economic development, Hayes told the Senate Entergy and Natural Resources Committee that he is looking forward to “working with Native American communities,” which “was one of the most rewarding aspects of the job” when he worked at Interior in the Clinton era.
Although after leaving office last time around, Hayes was accused of violating anti-“revolving door” policies designed to prevent too much cozying up between lobbyists and government, a bipartisan investigation did not evidence that to be the case. Still, the relationship did not sit too well with Senator John McCain. Hayes did not represent any tribal clients during his time at Latham and Watkins.
Ken Salazar Tapped to Head Interior Department
Posted by Kathryn and Steve Dec President-elect Obama has tapped Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO) to head the Department of the Interior. Salazar is former director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources and state attorney general. A first-term senator, he is a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Interior Department nixes jaguar recovery plan
Critics say push for border security fence is behind abandonment of effort
Below:
  • ad info The Associated Press updated 1/17/2008 10:28:44 PM ET The Interior Department has abandoned attempts to craft a recovery plan for the endangered jaguar because too few of the rare cats have been spotted in New Mexico and Arizona to warrant such action. Some critics of the decision said Thursday the jaguar is being sacrificed for the government's new border fence, which is going up along many of the same areas where the cat has crossed into the United States from Mexico. If the U.S. border areas were designated critical recovery areas for the jaguar, then it would constrain the Homeland Security Department in building the fence, said Kieran Suckling, policy director of the Center for Biological Diversity.

Government Executive August 1, 2000 The Interior Department's 62-year-old museum is artistic, and definitely undervisited. During our visit the museum was displaying Adriel Heisey's aerial photographs of Navajo country taken from his homemade ultralight craft and Kenji Kawana's stunning black-and-white portraits of the Navajo people. In the permanent collection are Edward S. Curtis' classic photographs of the Indians of the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone region and Charley Harper's clever wildlife art, which fuses graphic arts and commercial advertising.
The eight galleries that make up the museum have some old-style exhibits. For example, a telephone that illustrates a point about the use of minerals in common products was probably manufactured in the late 1950s. But the place has a New Deal quality - the museum was established by Secretary Harold L. Ickes - and retro 1930s miniature dioramas that portray classic scenes such as the Fort Union trading post on the Upper Missouri River (1835); Washburn-Dane expedition through Yellowstone (1870); Guthrie, Okla., land office (1889); Window Rock, Ariz., Navajo tribal capital (1938); Juneau, Alaska, gold mill (1935); and central Washington (1939).
Interior, wryly known as the "Department of Everything Else," displays the works of its various bureaus with such artifacts as Lyndon Johnson's cowboy hat and boots (National Park Service), woodcuts and other handicrafts from the Pacific Islands (Bureau of Insular Affairs), puppets used to feed condor chicks (Fish and Wildlife Service), and slices of concrete cores from Grand Coolie and Hoover dams (Bureau of Reclamation).
