Bamidele Demerson looks forward to mining historical gems in Greensboro's backyard Demerson comes to Greensboro after serving as the executive director of the Harrison Museum of African American Culture in Roanoke, Va., where he planned exhibits and educational programs focused particularly on the history and creative experiences of people in that city. Prior to that, Demerson was curator of education and director of exhibitions and research during a 10-year tenure with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Mich. Demerson brings more than 35 years of administration, instruction, research, collections' management and exhibition development to the Museum. In his visits to museums across the globe, Demerson has observed the practices of other acclaimed institutions and honed his knowledge of exhibit installation, as well as artifact collection and preservation. "Museums are houses of memory and should help us not only to understand social change, but also make it," said Demerson. "From a curator and educational programming perspective, we have to be careful that visitors appreciate that we are not telling an exclusively African-American story. The narrative here in Greensboro, for example, is about a quest for freedom, and that is a human story."

The exhibit is called the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame and has the cemented footprints of Ralph David Abernathy, President Jimmy Carter, Thurgood Marshall, Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks, and many more. Six hundred spaces have been reserved for current and future footprints.

The building that houses this museum of African-American history was once the Woolworth store that was the site of a historic civil rights action. On Feb. 1, 1960, four black college students sat down at the white section of the lunch counter, igniting the sit-in movement that spread across the country. The project documents the transformation of the Woolworth building into the Center and Museum. Originally submitted by: Howard Coble, Representative (6th District).

    • But first, a report on the anniversary of the Greensboro sit-in and the opening of a civil rights museum to honor it.
Greensboro Sit-In Monday marks the fiftieth anniversary of a very famous civil rights protest in the United States - the Greensboro sit-in. On February 1, 1960, four black college students took seats at a restaurant counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. The counter was for white people only. The young men were refused service but they refused to leave. They returned to the store with other protesters day after day. Their sit-ins brought police and national attention. Now a new museum opens to remember and celebrate the event. Faith Lapidus has our story. When they returned to the university, the four students called on others to join them the next day at Woolworth's. They returned to the lunch counter with four black women. They sat there for four hours. No one would serve them. Some white customers made angry comments. Newspaper and television reporters appeared. So did the local police.
