State Responsibility Project
About the Project
The Project started in 1997 when the Centre's Director, Professor James Crawford became the International Law Commission Special Rapporteur on State Responsibility. This site charts the history of the work on State responsibility between 1996 and 2001 and collates the materials relating to this work to form a Document Collection of nearly all the relevant historical documents for that period.
History of the work on State responsibility
The work on State responsibility was finally completed in August 2001 when the ILC, after some forty years of work, adopted the Draft Articles on their second reading. The Articles were then submitted to the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly. The General Assembly subsequently adopted Resolution 56/83 (12 December 2001) which took note of the Articles and recommended them to the attention of Governments. INTERNATIONAL LAW A summary by Joan M. Veon A most sophisticated phrase, "international law." It could mean anything, like beauty which is in the "eyes of the beholder." In order to understand what is really going on around us on the global level, we must understand the history, changes and future of international law. History Current Writings In a book, "Introduction to the Study of International Organization," written by Putnam B. Potter, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin and published by The Century Company in New York in 1925, Dr. Potter writes this in his first chapter and first paragraph: During the past twenty-five years a new phrase has come into common speech and into the formal literature of political science: international organization. The rise of the idea which this term expresses is no less significant than was the emergence of the idea of 'international law,' or a 'law of nations,' at an earlier time.... It is time that we devoted more attention to the aggregate of institutions and usages for governing the modern world, in so far as the world is governed as a unit. However, it is better, for various reasons, not to employ the obvious phrase 'world government,' but to use a title which indicates, to some extent, the nature of the chief process by which the world has come to enjoy some measure of unified government, namely, 'international organizations.' Convention on the Rights of the Child
Introduction The human rights framework Protecting and realizing children's rights Understanding the Convention on the Rights of the Child ...
What we do
Children have rights as human beings and also need special care and protection. UNICEF’s mission is to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF is guided in doing this by the provisions and principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Built on varied legal systems and cultural traditions, the Convention is a universally agreed set of non-negotiable standards and obligations. These basic standards—also called human rights—set minimum entitlements and freedoms that should be respected by governments. They are founded on respect for the dignity and worth of each individual, regardless of race, colour, gender, language, religion, opinions, origins, wealth, birth status or ability and therefore apply to every human being everywhere. With these rights comes the obligation on both governments and individuals not to infringe on the parallel rights of others. These standards are both interdependent and indivisible; we cannot ensure some rights without

  • Who we are
    War and International Humanitarian Law
Armed conflict is as old as humankind itself. There have always been customary practices in war, but only in the last 150 years have States made international rules to limit the effects of armed conflict for humanitarian reasons. The Geneva Conventions and the Hague Conventions are the main examples. Usually called international humanitarian law (IHL), it is also known as the law of war or the law of armed conflict. Read more
