61. What The Bubble Got Right
Essay derived from an invited talk at ICFP 2004. Discusses the dot-com bubble and lasting lessons learned from it.
http://www.paulgraham.com/bubble.html
September 2004
(This essay is derived from an invited talk at ICFP 2004.)
I had a front row seat for the Internet Bubble, because I worked at Yahoo during 1998 and 1999. One day, when the stock was trading around $200, I sat down and calculated what I thought the price should be. The answer I got was $12. I went to the next cubicle and told my friend Trevor. "Twelve!" he said. He tried to sound indignant, but he didn't quite manage it. He knew as well as I did that our valuation was crazy.
As in a Ponzi scheme, what seemed to be the returns of this system were simply the latest round of investments in it. What made it not a Ponzi scheme was that it was unintentional. At least, I think it was. The venture capital business is pretty incestuous, and there were presumably people in a position, if not to create this situation, to realize what was happening and to milk it.
A year later the game was up. Starting in January 2000, Yahoo's stock price began to crash, ultimately losing 95% of its value.
Notice, though, that even with all the fat trimmed off its market cap, Yahoo was still worth a lot. Even at the morning-after valuations of March and April 2001, the people at Yahoo had managed to create a company worth about $8 billion in just six years.

The World-Wide Web: Origins and Beyond
As the popularity of the Internet increases, people become more aware of its colossal potential. The World-Wide Web (WWW) is a product of the continuous search for innovative ways of sharing information resources. This paper describes some of the historical aspects of the World-Wide Web development, as well as the alternative methods of universal information sharing through hypertext, such as the Xanadu project. The basic structure of the WWW and the Xanadu system is also discussed, in order to illustrate the general nature of global information networks.
What is the World-Wide Web?
People have dreamt of a universal information database since late nineteen forties. In this database, not only would the data be accessible to people around the world, but it would also "easily link to other pieces of information, so that only the most important data would be quickly found by a user."

  • Revolutionised human (tele)communications.
  • Morse Code a series of dots and dashes used to communicate between humans. This is not a million miles away from how computers communicate via (binary 0/1) data today. Although it is much slower!!

73. History & Future Of The Internet
In this article Internet pioneer, Philip Emeagwali, reflects on his contributions and those of others.
http://emeagwali.com/history/internet/index.html

Emeagwali answers some frequently asked questions about the Internet.
Emeagwali
Can you explain what you mean when you say "supercomputer is the father of the Internet?" The Internet originated because the supercomputer created a need for it. The Internet is the technological embodiment of e pluribus unum , the Latin phrase “out of many, one.” That is, out of many computers, emerged one Internet. The origin is the point where the computer gave birth to the Internet. That, in turn, was preceded by our understanding that many processors could be harnessed to form one supercomputer. Therefore, it was the supercomputer technology that gave birth to the Internet. The supercomputer is the father of the Internet. The engine that drives a supercomputer is thousands of processors that are tightly-coupled. We then harness those tightly-coupled processors to compute and communicate simultaneously. Similarly, the engine that drives the Internet is loosely-coupled millions of computers that we've harnessed to compute and communicate, asynchronously. In other words, the essential work of the supercomputer is concurrent in time while that of the Internet lacks this concurrence in time.

Welcome to DunsterNet, brought to you by Suresh Chanmugam www.seán.com What is DunsterNet? DunsterNet began as an advanced experimental network of high performance digital computing devices in the early 1990's. Founded by Suresh Chanmugam, Justin Goodyear, and Mark Baskin while undergraduates at Harvard University, DunsterNet soon grew to comprise over 3 million nodes and 44 million users. It later merged with several smaller networks such as Arpanet and NSFnet to form a global "network of networks." DunsterNet has authenticated logons since October 20, 1996 Below are pictures of roommates and friends from Dunster House ... Click on a face to find out where they spend all of their time now (work). The story of DunsterNet's initial implementation is chronicled in the DunsterNet Gallery . Members of the development team frequently gather in the common room to post messages for one another. Much of the original DunsterNet network infrastructure still remains in Dunster Room C27 and is still used to carry analog telecommunications voice traffic. Users with the RealAudio plugin can click here to tap into the phone line in Dunster C27 and listen in on its current residents' phone conversations.

Why I'm Not Answering Your Email
    Don't Trust the Census
We are in the middle of another decennial data-rape, also known as the Census. But you shouldn't tell the Census anything. The law says they can't release the info you provide for 99 years but if they want to, they just change the law. They've done it twice before. When the US Government rounded up Japanese-Americans during WW2, the "Second War Powers Act" let them use the "supposedly private" census data to tell the thugs where their victims lived. Homeland Security zealots extracted similar data about Muslims and Middle Easterners in 2003, under the Patriot Act. Will your innocent ancestry, profession, or hobby be the target of the next hysterical witch-hunt? By then it will be too late to un-reveal your information. Don't help the government constrain you; always decline to give them information. They aren't recording it for your benefit. Details
US Homeland Security recorded what book I was reading as I crossed the border
In direct violation of the Privacy Act, which states that federal agencies shall not record the how citizens use their First Amendment rights (unless specifically instructed to do so by statute), the US Department of Homeland Security recorded in my permanent dossier that as I flew into San Francisco from London, I had " many small flashlights with pot leaves on them. He had a book entitled 'Drugs And Your Rights'.

How the Internet Came to Be
by Vinton Cerf, as told to Bernard Aboba
    The birth of the ARPANET
My involvement began when I was at UCLA doing graduate work from
1967 to 1972. There were several people at UCLA at the time
studying under Jerry Estrin, and among them was Stephen Crocker.
Stephen was an old high-school friend, and when he found out
that I wanted to do graduate work in computer science, he invited me to interview at UCLA. When I started graduate school, I was originally looking at multiprocessor hardware and software. Then a Request For Proposal came in from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA. The proposal was about packet switching, and it went along with the packet-switching network that DARPA was building. Several UCLA faculty were interested in the RFP. Leonard Kleinrock had come to UCLA from MIT, and he brought with him his interest in that kind of communications environment. His thesis
