An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea , or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough. In addition, there is cultural invention , which is an innovative set of useful social behaviors adopted by people and passed on to others. Invention is a creative process . An open and curious mind enables one to see beyond what is known. Seeing a new possibility, a new connection or relationship can spark an invention. Inventive thinking frequently involves combining concepts or elements from different realms that would not normally be put together. Sometimes inventors skip over the boundaries between distinctly separate territories or fields. Ways of thinking, materials, processes or tools from one realm are used as no one else has imagined in a different realm.

How does an inventor turn their new invention ideas into money? This is probably the single most often asked question I receive from people who have no clue as to how to proceed. They often hope that they can sell their brilliant new idea to somebody who will hand them money. Sorry, it just does not work that way and you often end up handing a fistful of money in the other direction. The best answer I can give is to get educated in how the whole process works - how to potentially turn an idea into a money making invention. Upfront, you need to know that only a minority of ideas eventually make money. However, that should not stop you from inventing, after all even Thomas Edison had his

Beginning Steps for Inventors with a New Idea
    By Stephen Paul Gnass
As an individual in the early idea stages, are you experiencing excitement and frustration right now? On the one hand, do you see the rewards and potential of your idea while simultaneously being plagued by a multitude of confusing questions about how to start, who to go to, who to trust, how much it will cost, and whether your idea is even worth pursuing? If so, you're not alone. In more than a decade of guiding thousands of inventors, I've found that most people with new ideas have little or no experience in commercializing a product, and usually work at a full-time job. So it's very understandable that they may not have the knowledge, time or resources to develop and launch a new product. My goal as Executive Director of NCIO, is to educate individuals with a new idea about what they need to do, to help increase the odds that their new products will make it to market.

Inventing 101: How Inventors Profit from Inventions
The key is to invest time and money carefully
How does a professional inventor know if an invention will be a commercial success?
An invention idea is great if:
It solves a problem that people want solved (including problems people didn’t know they had).
Everyone involved in designing, manufacturing and marketing the product can make better than normal profits. That’s it! If an inventor has a product idea that people want to buy and a way to make and sell it at a healthy profit then they’ve got half the battle won. Ideally the “people” should be a group that is easy to define and reach. This could mean a specific trade group such as dentists or it could mean the broad consumer market – if the product is appropriate for “everyone”. Click on the links below to learn more about the process of identifying the potential for success and how to take the first steps to realize that success (while keeping as much money as possible in your wallet).

Inventing a New Kind of Pencil
So you want to do some inventing? Well then, ask a student in your class to volunteer showing a pencil to the class that needs improving? For example, a pencil like this:
    Then ask the following question:
    What's wrong with this pencil?
    Here are some typical replies:
    • small
    • ugly
    • no eraser
    • needs sharpening
    • made out of wood
    • can't see inside and how it works
    • can't write on chalkboard
    • not made of steel
    • goes down too fast
    • lead always breaks
    • can't eat it
    • easy to lose
    • not interesting
    • not decorated
    • too skinny
    • too fat
Don't forget to say some of those encouraging words . And remember, be non-judgmental, do not allow any criticism, and quickly jot the ideas on the board. Then ask "How can we improve this pencil?" What new features can we add to make it more useful. Here are some more ideas.
    Kids Inventions!
    • put an eraser on
    • make the eraser bigger
    • change the color
    • make it longer
    • get a new one
    • make it fatter
    • make it skinnier
After getting half a dozen or so more idea, I dig into my box of pencils and pull out one to fix one of the above mentioned problems. Usually someone notices the lack of an eraser, so I like to show a pencil that has two erasers on the end.
Invariably someone blurts out that it looks like a hammer. Yes, perhaps you might find one like this in your doctor's office! Then I go around the room testing some student's knee reflex, and imitate writing down on a clipboard. "Yup, your reflexes are fine!"
