The bittersweet drama INVENTING THE ABBOTTS chronicles the coming of age of two brothers, Doug and Jacey Holt, played with touching sincerity by Joaquin Phoenix (TO DIE FOR) and Billy Crudup (SLEEPERS). Set in 1957 in Haley, Illinois, the show is reminiscent of several old movies, but the story remains fresh and relevant. Doug has fewer social graces than his slightly older brother Jacey. Doug will try anything, including painting on fake sideburns, to impress the girls. Jacey, on the other hand, attracts female companionship like honey attracts flies. As much as they profess their differences, they are remarkably similar in looks and tastes.

Forty years later he became an American citizen. Although not commonly considered in the context of American art, Duchamp was indelibly shaped by his adopted country. It was in the United States that Duchamp first made his mark on modern art even before his arrival, thanks to the explosive reception of Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2) at the 1913 Armory Show. Duchamp returned to France in 1923, making occasional trips back to the United States, where he settled permanently in 1942. He relished the opportunity to reinvent himself and did so frequently. Styling himself a provocateur, in 1917 he famously submitted a urinal, entitled Fountain , to a nonjuried art exhibition, from which it was rejected. The work bore his first pseudonym, R. Mutt. This alternate identity would not be his last.

Read more: Cosmic accidents: 10 lucky breaks for humanity Fresh pastures meant a cosier life for early humans – if they hadn't, we would never have loosened up enough to learn to speak And walk out of Africa we did - eventually. Anatomically modern humans, with their slender frames and large brains, had evolved in what is now Ethiopia by some 200,000 years ago, but it was less than 100,000 years ago that a small group stepped across the Red Sea onto the Arabian peninsula. We don't know why: possibly it was an act of whim or wanderlust rather than one of pressing need. Either way, it was one giant leap.

    76. 1492 -- Inventing America
In part due to this confusion, Europeans conjured up or invented images and tales to explain America that would conform to the descriptions of Marco Polo
    http://www.ibiblio.org/expo/1492.exhibit/d-Inventing.Amer/inventing.amer.html
    Inventing America
The name America was given to the Western Hemisphere by European writers and mapmakers after Columbus's death. Nothing in their experiences had led the first explorers to realize that they had come into contact with a vast and unrecorded continent, many times the size of Europe. Previously there had been no accounts, or even rumors, of the "unknown" peoples of this "new" continent in European scholarly literature and discussion or in popular chronicles. Mediterranean explorers in search of the spices and riches of the Far East initially believed that they had reached Asia. In part due to this confusion, Europeans conjured up or "invented" images and tales to explain America that would conform to the descriptions of Marco Polo and others. In early allegorical images, "America" was sometimes portrayed as a noble, native woman submissively awaiting European arrival. Ferocious sea animals and exotic creatures filled early maps of the region. Regrettably, we still have incomplete knowledge of the world view and everyday life of the varied peoples of the Americas before European settlement.
    Spain in America
The Gutierrez map depicts what appears to be the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V (Charles I of Spain), as the reborn Caesar in his chariot crossing the Atlantic to lay claim to America. Mediterranean explorers had broken open the "gates of Gilbraltar", considered by the ancient Romans to be the westermost limit of their empire. They revealed a "fourth continent" across the Atlantic and a whole new world of potential for the modern empire builders.

    Planet of Slums
    Soaring with Fidel
    The Bill McKibben Reader
Americans consider Niagara Falls a natural wonder, but the Falls aren't very natural anymore. Water diverted, riverbed reshaped, landscape redesigned, stabilized and flanked with cheap thrills, the Falls are more a monument to man's meddling than to nature's strength. Seamlessly weaving together science, history, aesthetics, and personal narrative, Inventing Niagara traces the path of America's best-loved natural wonder from sublime icon to engineering marvel to camp spectacle. Along the way, we discover a hidden history: the Mohawk chief who wrested the Falls from his adopted tribe, the revered town father who secretly assisted Niagara slavecatchers, the wartime workers who unknowingly helped build the Bomb, and the missing pharaoh who spent a century incognito at the Falls. With an uncanny ability to zero in on the buried truth, Ginger Strand introduces us to underwater dams, freaks of nature, graverobbers, mythical maidens, and 280,000 radioactive mice. A history of more than just the Falls, Inventing Niagara traces the course of natural wonder in America, illuminating what the Falls have to tell us about our history, our environment, and ourselves.
