Related articles Byline: Mark Bruno and Jenna Gottlieb DETROIT - The new $35 billion UAW retiree medical trust probably will resemble a pension fund with a twist. Last week's agreement between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers would shift some $51 billion in retiree health obligations to a voluntary employees beneficiary association set up solely for post-retirement medical and run by the union. GM is expected to fund those liabilities at about 70 cents on the dollar, meaning the VEBA would have about $35 billion in investible assets. Tom Wickham and Brandi Webster, spokesmen for GM, declined to comment on the details of the VEBA. Roger Kerson, UAW spokesman, also declined to comment. Based on experience elsewhere, the VEBA might be invested similar to a pension fund, but with a lot more variability to take into account both short-term liabilities and unforeseeable medical inflation down the road.

for December 20, 2008 It seems that every everyday I look at the news for the financial markets and see that we are experiencing another “layoff” at some company again. It looks very similar to the 1990’s when “layoff mania” was last in full swing. Companies were firing people by the thousands and the stock market was dropping and real estate prices were falling also. Nothing's more unstable and unpredictable than the worldwide trade market. Yes you can read all the available resources and even memorize top-of-the-line resources on the field of financing and mortgages but it won't necessarily make you an expert. Recent developments in the market though are allowing us to have a good picture of its very near future The recent surge in the market coupled with new “lowest” Fed rate on record and 30 year mortgages in the 5% range should provide some motivation for stock and real estate investors to start testing the waters again. This can only help the current situation.

Basic Principles of Investing:
A Down-to-Earth,
No-Nonsense Approach
These 16 practical lessons for investing came out my 50 years of making good and bad decisions, setting goals and then abandoning them, buying good-quality stocks but also chasing performance, almost giving up after one grinding bear market, but, most of all, continuing to learn more every step of the way. Back when I was in high school, almost every Saturday, I'd take the bus and subway from my home in Malverne, Long Island into New York City to forage around the shops on Cortlandt Street for military surplus bargains. By experimenting and trying to get stuff working again, I learned a great deal about radios and electronics. In fact, I learned enough to set up a little after-school business repairing car radios which, in those days, were notoriously unreliable.
By the time I was 15 (1954), I had saved a few hundred dollars from the business which, in those days, was a princely sum to a 15-year-old. I dearly wanted to buy an oscilloscope but Herb Bushman, a friend of our family, suggested that maybe I should buy a couple of shares of stock. Well, this was a fairly radical idea. My father had all of his meager savings in the bank and in some War Bonds and the only thing he knew about the stock market was that it caused a lot of investors to wind up in the poorhouse during the depression.
It just so happened that right around then I had entered a contest sponsored by RCA in which you had to write in 75 words or less why you like RCA service instruments. Lo and behold, I won one of the 5th place prizes, a spanking new vacuum tube voltmeter, that was a whole lot better than the military surplus meter I was using. As a result, I put off the purchase of the oscilloscope and bought some shares of stock. I remember clearly that Herb was very emphatic about not just buying shares of one company, but buying three or four.

Commercial Real Estate Investment - Question about investing (general)
Expert: kevin kemper - 2/20/2005 Question Hi, I recently started saving to purchase a home/condo in the next 2 to 3 years. The basic idea is save up as much money as possible in order to put down a sufficient downpayment so my mortgage payment is only a little more than what I would be paying for rent. While I have been looking for properties I came across a few cheap ones that I was thinking about purchasing as a temporary investment property while I save. My plan is too keep this property for the time I am saving and sell it when I am done giving me more money than just keeping what I save in the bank.
