    Perspectives of Hiring Superintendents

Patricia A. Cruzeiro and Mike Boone ABSTRACT: This article reports the results of an inquiry into the dynamics of principal selection in rural school districts in two mid-American states with high numbers of rural schools. The study focuses on two questions: (1) are rural school districts experiencing a shortage of qualified applicants for vacant principals positions; and (2) what professional and personal characteristics do superintendents seek in selecting principals for rural schools? Data for the study were collected through a review of the relevant research literature and interviews with superintendents of rural school districts. The study confirmed that rural school districts in these two states are in fact not experiencing a shortage of qualified principal applicants and delineates specific professional and personal characteristics superintendents seek in the principals who lead rural schools.

Commercial Buildings The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has benchmarking tools available for 10 prominent U.S. building types. These tools address both electric and non-electric fuels simultaneously (whole-building energy use) within each tool and also normalize for the key drivers of energy use specific to each building type. They represent the state-of-the-art in energy performance benchmarking for commercial buildings. Portfolio Manager is EPA's tool that allows users to track the energy performance of and benchmark buildings within their entire portfolio. Portfolio Manager operates on monthly energy use data. It is also used to support the qualification process for the Energy Star performance recognition available from EPA for high-performance buildings. This tool is widely used by both the private and government sectors. Go to EPA's Portfolio Manager Tool Target Finder is EPA's tool that allows a user to estimate an energy performance benchmark or target for a new building design. With this in hand, a user can test their design options toward achieving a desired performance target. Target Finder operates on annual energy use data.

    Benchmarking Your Building's
    Energy Performance
Comparing annual energy use intensities (EUIs) can quickly show you how the energy performance of your building compares to others. Usually expressed in kBtu/sf, the EUI indicates the rate at which energy is used at your building. The example that follows illustrates building energy performance benchmarking applied to K-12 schools. Similar distributions that will allow you to benchmark the energy performance of 16 different building types are available at this website. Many of these are regionally-based, which help to account for weather, building construction, and building systems differences that exist across the U.S. The benchmarking distribution below (a descending cumulative histogram) was created by arranging the EUIs for 449 K-12 public schools across the U.S. in ascending order. For a specific EUI located on the x-axis, the y-axis value indicates the percent of the 449 schools that are less efficient (use more energy). From the figure, Tennessee's Daniel Boone High ranks at approximately 25%. This indicates 75% of U.S. schools are more efficient, suggesting this school may have sizeable opportunities for efficiency gains and energy cost reductions. Nebraska's Maxey Elementary, however, a recently constructed school with a geothermal-based heating and cooling system, is a model of energy efficiency outperforming over 90% of schools in the U.S. Locating where your school's EUI lies on the curve will show you how well it performs against other U.S. K-12 schools.

In addition, I serve as the teaching mentor for the annual Knaphus College Teaching Fellowship. In my teaching I strive to deeply engage students and help them understand the relationship of the academic topics we consider to their own lives. I am particularly interested in the challenge of engaging students in large format introductory classes. Some of the approaches for engaging students in such contexts are described here ( Engaging Students: Large Format Classes and Service-Learning ). I incorporate numerous opportunities for students in my large format classes to discuss and think more deeply about aspects of what I trying to help them learn. A video of one such approach is available here ( Small-group interactive activities to supplement instruction ). I also incorporate service-learning opportunities into my classes. One such example is the
