GEOGRAPHY Iraq is bordered by Kuwait, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The country slopes from mountains over 3,000 meters (10,000 ft.) above sea level along the border with Iran and Turkey to the remnants of sea-level, reedy marshes in the southeast. Much of the land is desert or wasteland. The mountains in the northeast are an extension of the alpine system that runs eastward from the Balkans into southern Turkey, northern Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, terminating in the Himalayas. Average temperatures range from higher than 48 degrees C (120 degrees F) in July and August to below freezing in January. Most of the rainfall occurs from December through April and averages between 10 and 18 centimeters (4-7 in.) annually. The mountainous region of northern Iraq receives appreciably more precipitation than the central or southern desert region. Area: 437,072 sq. km.; about the size of California.

Iraq Geography
Iraq geography is a contrast, from snowy mountain peaks to sea level at the Gulf, from desert sands to the Garden of Eden. This country has everything, but mostly sand and intense heat. Iraq's geographical location is something most young Americans are not familiar with, even though our troops are there. If you were an adult during the first Gulf War back in 1990-1991, you may recall seeing maps of that country on the news, but it is rarely taught in American schools. The geography of Iraq is complex, with many terrains and internal waterways. Iraq is almost totally landlocked, with Saudi Arabia to the south and southwest. Jordan is on the western-most border. Syria is on the mid to upper west side. Turkey is at the northern border. Iran shares the eastern border with Iraq until the southeastern tip is reached. Kuwait is on the tip next to Saudi Arabia. It is between Kuwait and Iran that Iraq touches the Persian Gulf.

A Armagan K., Iraq: "Everybody wants the United States to fall apart, even most US citizens. Even Americans are sick of the trickery and tyranny practiced by Washington. When the US falls apart, everybody can live in a state (then an independent country) that suits his lifestyle: polygamous Mormons, creationists, homosexuals, libertarians, pacifists, and so on. It's going to be a free world for everybody." HOME IRAQ Geography From the north, Turkey is borders Iraq from the north, Iran on the east, the Persian Gulf on the southeast, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia on the south, and Jordan and Syria on the west with an area of 168,928 square miles (437,522 square kilometers). The Great Zab River flows into Iraq from Turkey and eventually merges with the Tigris 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Mosul. Consists primarily of lowlands that seldom exceed 1,000 feet (300 meters) in elevation. The hills in northeastern Iraq rise into the Zagros Mountains, which extend along the border with Iran and reach an elevation of 12,001 feet (3,658 meters) at Rawanduz. To the south and southwest, Iraq shares desert steppe with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.

Iraq mainly consists of desert, but near the two major rivers are fertile alluvial plains, as the rivers carry about 60 million cubic metres of silt annually to the delta. The north of the country is mostly composed of mountains; the highest point being at 3,611 metres point, unnamed on the map opposite, but known locally as Cheekah Dar . Iraq has a small coastline measuring 58 km along the Persian Gulf. Close to the coast and along the Shatt al-Arab there used to be marshlands, but many were drained in the 1990s. The local climate is mostly desert, with mild to cool winters and dry, hot, cloudless summers. The northern mountainous regions have cold winters with occasional heavy snows, sometimes causing extensive flooding. With its 115 billion barrels of proved oil reserves, Iraq ranks fourth in the world behind Saudi Arabia, Canada, and Iran in the amount of Oil reserves;yet the United States Department of Energy estimates that up to 90% of the country remains unexplored. These regions could yield an additional 100 billion barrels. Iraq's oil production costs are among the lowest in the world, but only about 2,000 oil wells have been drilled in Iraq, compared with about 1 million wells in Texas alone.

    http://countrystudies.us/iraq/26.htm
    GEOGRAPHY
Iraq Table of Contents The border with Iran has been a continuing source of conflict and was partially responsible for the outbreak in 1980 of the present war. The terms of a treaty negotiated in 1937 under British auspices provided that in one area of the Shatt al Arab the boundary would be at the low water mark on the Iranian side. Iran subsequently insisted that the 1937 treaty was imposed on it by "British imperialist pressures," and that the proper boundary throughout the Shatt was the thalweg. The matter came to a head in 1969 when Iraq, in effect, told the Iranian government that the Shatt was an integral part of Iraqi territory and that the waterway might be closed to Iranian shipping. Through Algerian mediation, Iran and Iraq agreed in March 1975 to normalize their relations, and three months later they signed a treaty known as the Algiers Accord. The document defined the common border all along the Shatt estuary as the thalweg. To compensate Iraq for the loss of what formerly had been regarded as its territory, pockets of territory along the mountain border in the central sector of its common boundary with Iran were assigned to it. Nonetheless, in September 1980 Iraq went to war with Iran, citing among other complaints the fact that Iran had not turned over to it the land specified in the Algiers Accord. This problem has subsequently proved to be a stumbling block to a negotiated settlement of the ongoing conflict.
