10 June 2005 NORTHERN IRELAND ARCHAEOLOGY DAYS DOE’s Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) has invited the public to attend Archaeology Day events over this month’s summer solstice. Michael Coulter, Director of Built Heritage EHS, said: "We are fortunate in Northern Ireland that our heritage is so richly diverse and this will be reflected in the variety of events which will take place over the Archaeology Days this weekend (18/19 June). "We are offering opportunities to see, for instance, what happens at an archaeological dig, or to observe the construction of an early Christian house. There will be demonstrations of ancient weaponry and crafts, tours of an ancient battle site and more. "Archaeology Days provides everyone, young and old, with the chance to take part in a unique insight into Northern Ireland’s archaeology and to answer those niggling questions of how our Ancestors lived in the past." Many of the events, provided by a host of organisations, are free. NOTES TO EDITORS:
Some of the local events taking place:
  • Belfast: Make your own prehistoric pottery, Ulster Museum; tour of Edenderry village; tour of Black and Divis Mountains prior to the National Trust making the hills open to the general public.

    Ireland - Archaeology in Ireland?
Expert: Martin C.O`Brien - 7/15/2006 Question Hi, I'm a college student here in the US at the moment but I'm hoping to travel to Ireland to live and work as an archaeologist within the next 6 years or so. Could you tell me about jobs (in general) regarding Irish archaeology? I haven't had much luck trying to find info on the subject on the Internet. Are there job openings there for Americans? Answer Hi, sorry for the delay in my reply. Been really busy lately.
