    The Geography of Ancient Ireland
The geography of ancient Ireland is rooted in myth and legend, and so the degree of certainty about anything geographical diminishes the further back in time it is. With that in mind, the following brief summary may be of some help:
    Provinces
What is now four provinces was probably in ancient times five, as is indicated by the Irish word for the provinces, (which means fifths). They are Ulster (Ulaid), Connacht, Munster (Mumu), Leinster (Lagin), Meath (Mide). See Map (This is a very large map; an alternative smaller map is under development). Ulster presently contains the counties of Donegal, Derry, Antrim, Tyrone, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Armagh, and Cavan. (Cavan, Monaghan, and Donegal are in the Republic; the rest constitute Northern Ireland.) In ancient times, the extension of Ulster was determined more by the presence of the Ulaid (i.e., the people of Ulster) than any geographical boundaries; this observation applies, of course, to all the geographical divisions of Ireland in ancient times.. Louth, Monaghan, Armagh, and Down were all certainly part of ancient Ulster; as one moves away from this area, the identification becomes more and more vague. The ancient capital was Emuin Machae (var. Emain Macha), which was located near the town of Armagh (approximately two miles west of the town at Navan Fort). The term "capital" does not mean an administrative or legislative center; rather it was the more-or-less permanent site of the royal residence.

    An Outline Geography of Ireland
    CONTENTS Introduction

Ireland is an island on the western fringe of Europe between latitude 51 1/2 and 55 1/2 degrees north, and longitude 5 1/2 to 10 1/2 degrees west. Its greatest length, from Malin Head in the north to Mizen Head in the south, is 486 km and its greatest width from east to west is approximately 275 km. Since 1921 the island has been divided politically into two parts. The independent twenty-six county area, comprising 70,282 sq. km, has a population of 3,523,401 (1991). Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom and contains six of the nine counties of the ancient province of Ulster, has a population of 1,569,971 (1991). In 1973 Ireland became a member of the European Union (EU).
    Physical Landscape
The two great mountain systems of Europe, north of the Alps, converge westwards to meet and mingle in Ireland. The older (Caledonian) extends from Scandinavia through Scotland to the north and west of Ireland, where it gives rise to the rugged and mountainous landscapes of Counties Donegal, Mayo and Galway. The higher mountains are of quartzite which weathers into bare, cone-shaped peaks such as Errigal (752 m) in Donegal, Croagh Patrick (765m) in Mayo and the Twelve Bens in Galway. Structures of similar age are responsible for the Wicklow and Blackstairs mountains which extend south-westwards from Dublin Bay for a distance of more than 100 km. In these, long-continued denudation of a great anticlinal structure has exposed a granite core which now forms rounded peat-covered uplands, the crests being notched in places by glacial cirques. The mountains are penetrated by deep glacially modified valleys of which the best known is Glendalough in County Wicklow.

    Ireland:  GEOGRAPHY
If you want to know more about the geography of Ireland, you will first have to know the location of Ireland.  It is a small island in the north of the Atlantic.  It consists of plains interspersed with mountains upon the coast.
This whole coastline consists of many peninsulas, islands, bays and headlands.  Shannon River bisects the island in two.  There are also plenty of lakes in Ireland, out of which the largest is Lough Neagh.  If you look at the political aspect of Ireland, Northern Ireland is governed by the United Kingdom.  This is 1/6 of Ireland state, which is independent.
The Irish separates Ireland from the UK.  In the same manner, the Celtic Sea separates Ireland from mainland Europe.  If you want to know how old the rock formations in Ireland are, they are just 1.7 billion years old!  You then see these rocks in Ireland, even now.  These rocks started off life as deposits from glaciers of ice, which means that Ireland was completely icebound at one time.  But the sequencing of these ancient rocks cannot be done, because of future geographical upheavals in the land. 600 million years ago, Ireland was below the sea, and the landmass broke off into two.  But for 150 million years ago, these broken portions drifted together to make up Ireland with its characteristic flora and fauna of that age, which can be found in the shape of fossils.  This was the time when red Sandstone was formed in Ireland.
