View of the Ring of Kerry, County Kerry Photo by DI Florian Fuchs (wikimedia commons) Ireland boasts of some of the most wondrous, breath taking and often astonishing geographical attractions; the island is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea that separates it from the United Kingdom. Ireland is divided into 32 counties of which 6 are in Ulster and form a part of Northern Ireland while the other 26 together are the Republic of Ireland. The island has typical topography where the periphery is lined by coastal mountains with low plains in the center. The numerous river flowing inland along with the several lakes together epitomize the geography of Ireland. The almost exhilarating feeling of exploring the island can be bet enjoyed as you traverse some of the most scenic routes on the island in your very own motor home. There are numerous campervan hire establishments that can be approached to rent a vehicle of your choice Although the island is not particularly large, the coast line is massive at 3700 kms; the largest mountain is the Carrauntoohill that rises to an elevation of 3,406 ft. The western coast of the island is full of innumerable vistas all of which offer a breath taking and panoramic view of the ocean and the island. the sobriquet given to Ireland “Emerald Isle; is quite apt considering that the mild oceanic climate of Ireland has led to the growth of a lush carpet of vegetation all over the island, speckled only by the peaks that jut through them.

Ireland's Geography
Ireland which often goes by its shorter name, Eire, is the 20th biggest island in the world, sitting in the north Atlantic off the European coast. It takes up an area slightly larger than America's state, West Virginia. Yet, it is the second biggest member of the British Isles archipelago, next to Britain which is the largest.
Ireland has always been famous for its unpredictable and mostly wet weather. One day it may be hot, the next day, cold, sunny for one hour, then rainy for the next. The reason for this is that Ireland is right under what's called a weather convergence. This means it is hit by three weather systems at once. Cold air blasts it from the North Pole, Asia contributes warm, dry winds and the Gulf Stream provides the rain. Ireland is overcast about half the year. Rain occurs more frequently in the west, while the southeast portion of the country generally gets more sun.
There is a huge difference in Ireland in the length of days between the winter and the summer. An average June day runs over 18 hours, while a day in December can be as short as just 7 hours long. And during some summer evenings in Ireland, the skies never go black, but remain at a level just below twilight.

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Think of something greengreen grass, green trees, or maybe you have a favorite green shirt. Have you ever seen an emerald? It is a beautiful and expensive green stone. Now imagine an entire country colored green! Ireland is an island country in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Much of the country is covered in green, grassy fields. That's why Ireland is called the Emerald Isle.
Ireland is covered in grass, a few forests, and bogs. Bogs are very wet patches of land covered by moss. Sometimes bogs are very easy to see, sometimes not. If you were to walk around parts of western Ireland, you might be surprised to feel the ground moving under your feet. It would probably mean you're walking on a bog.
Ireland has lots of history. There are many old farmhouses and castles there. Many of these houses and castles have been there for hundreds of years. One of the most famous castles in Ireland is found in a town called Cork. The castle is called Blarney Castle. The castle's story involves lots of liesand kissing!

The island of Ireland is 300 miles/450 km long and 190 miles/300 km wide and covers approximately 32,600 sq. miles/84,500 sq. km. Geography
Ulster
Inland from Belfast is the heartland of the historic linen industry around Lisburn, Lurgan and Portadown. Traces of this industrial heritage, initially developed by Huguenot refugees in the late 17th century, can be found throughout the region in confident and stylish old Victorian mill buildings. Just beyond is the great Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles and the largest inland fishery in Europe. The primitive attractive power of the great lake contrasts with the exquisite neatness of the stone-built villages which surround it in a style easily reminiscent of the Scottish lowlands. From the peatlands bordering Lough Neagh to the wild hillsides of Slieve Gullion in the South, is the green hilly Drumlin countryside of County Armagh.
The ancient city of Armagh, with its two cathedrals, the mediaeval St Patrick's Cathedral and chapterhouse (Church of Ireland) and the 19th century St. Patrick's Cathedral (Catholic) with its tall spires and brilliantly coloured interior and with Palace Stables and St Patrick's Trian (to explore the City's history), and the attractive 19th century streetscapes and old medieval centre, is still the ecclesiastical centre of Ireland. Just outside the town is both the massive (and well preserved) Navan Fort, dating back to 2,500 BC and inextricably interwoven with ancient Celtic myth and saga.
