BRITAIN SUSPENDS NORTHERN IRELAND GOVERNMENT Citing a breakdown in trust between the major political parties, the British secretary for Northern Ireland suspended the region's power-sharing government, saying he hoped the move would be a temporary setback.
    Online NewsHour Report:
    Northern Ireland
    Oct. 14, 2002:
    UK Announces Suspension
The suspension follows weeks of increasing tension and came one day ahead of a threatened walkout by First Minister David Trimble and his Ulster Unionist Party, the largest pro-British political party. "[I]t has become clear that decisive action is needed in order to safeguard the progress made and tackle the remaining challenges," John Reid, Britain's Northern Ireland Secretary, said in a statement Monday. "I hope the decision I have taken today marks a breathing space a chance to gather strength before that process moves forward once again." The latest crisis erupted after reports emerged of spying by the militant Irish Republican Army on members of the British government. A messenger in the Northern Ireland Office reportedly copied sensitive documents from British and Pro-British officials and gave them to a senior Sinn Fein member and the Provisional IRA. When news of scandal broke, Trimble threatened to pull his party out of the power-sharing government unless the governments threw Sinn Fein out of the assembly.

Question Hello, What side of the political spectrum has the Irish Government typically been on, historically? What about now? And why? Thank you, Greg. Answer Hello Greg... This is a nice straight forward question, but one that has many subtleties like everything else on the Island of Ireland. I'm sure that you are somewhat aware that the Irish Parliament has always embraced the Catholic - Nationalist/Republican traditions. Remember - the Republic is a theocracy! These people are responsible for the modern government now in power dating back to the horrific events in the early 1900's that I'm sure you have read about. Some interesting things here though... Sinn Fein have several seats in the Dail (Eireann) They can never participate in gov. in the English Parliament (eg. G.Adams) or Stormont, even though they won some seats because they have not subscribed to use 'strictly democratic and peacful means' to achieve their agenda, and in the case of Eng. Parliament, pledging loyalty to H.M.

    CONTENTS CONSTITUTION

Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The National Parliament (in the Irish language, Oireachtas) consists of the President (an tUachtarn) and two Houses: a House of Representatives (Dil ireann) and a Senate (Seanad ireann). The sole and exclusive power of making laws for the State is vested in Parliament. The functions and powers of the President, Dil and Seanad derive from the Constitution of Ireland (Bunreacht na hireann) and law.
The Constitution of Ireland is the basic law of the State. It was adopted by plebiscite in 1937. It is the successor of the Constitution of Dil ireann (1919) and the Constitution of the Irish Free State (1922). The Constitution states that all legislative, executive and judicial powers of Government derive from the people. It sets out the form of government and defines the powers of the President, the two Houses of the Oireachtas and the Government. It also defines the structure and powers of the courts, sets out the fundamental rights of citizens and contains a number of directive principles of social policy for the general guidance of the Oireachtas. The Constitution may be amended only by referendum.
The Constitution outlines what are considered the fundamental rights of the citizen. The definition of rights in the Constitution covers five broad headings: personal rights, the family, education, private property and religion.

Ireland: Government to impose draconian austerity measures with opposition support
      By Steve James
16 March 2009 Ireland's prime minister (Taoiseach), Brian Cowen, has warned of more savage cuts than expected in the emergency budget scheduled for April 7. Speaking to the Dail, or parliament, Cowen of Fianna Fail said that there had been a "serious deterioration in the public finances," with the Department of Finance estimating a deficit €4.5 billion. This is a rise in the deficit from a predicted 2 percent to as much as 6 or 6.5 percent. A bleaker picture still was painted by Central Bank Governor John Hurley, who said that Ireland is experiencing "an unprecedented contraction" in output, which is set to continue for the next two years. The 6 percent decline in Ireland's GDP would lead to unemployment topping 11 percent. The decline had begun in the property and construction sectors, but had now "broadened out into a marked weakening of domestic demand, which is being significantly amplified by the contraction in export demand as a result of the movement into recession of all our main trading partners," Hurley said.
